first week of july to beat the summer rush or
first week of september after the busy season

A friend and I are (tentatively) planning a "Cruise to Santa Cruz" around the 6-9th of August. "Fiesta Days" ends on the 6th, moon builds to full on the 9th. For someone like me, (with no knowledge and even less experience, of the Channel Islands) it sounds like a great time to go. I would like to hear input from anyone who has knowledge of the Channel Islands, weather and sea info, anchorages etc. PLease Advise...

) Obviously a different Channel Island cuise plan...but my request still stands...If any of you So Cal guys have experience or info on the Channel Islands, specifically Santa Cruz, I'm all ears... thanks.

The Trailer/sailors are having their annual N. Channel cruise the last 2 weeks in July. Typically 40 plus boats particpate, including a dozen Macs. It's a well organized cruise. For further info see their website or email me.

August thru Oct is a great time to visit the islands. the may - July fog is usually gone and long clear days. Santa Cruz is part of the national park and you can go ashore only by dingy. The back side is calmer and shields you from wind and current. Alperts and Coches Prietas are my favorites and our shallow draft leaves space for anchorages. 2 anchors are a must and a good setting anchor. You can dingy to a nice beach at Coches and at Yellow banks to join up with hiking trails.
Launch out of Channel Island Harbor...5 bucks for overnight stay at ramp....guest slip for a mac is 15 bucks a night. A close walk to good pizza, a west marine and boatersworld. From CIH its about 22 miles to santa cruz, with oil platforms for waypoints. A shipping channel that can be busy and weather off point conception.
A fun area to sail!

Hey Tom,
Just listen to the weather and make sure you don't hear anything about "Santa Ana" winds. If so, you don't want to be at the islands.
Also, if you have dogs, don't bring them... It is a national park and dogs are not allowed on the islands. Catalina is the only island withing reasonable reach around here that allows dogs on the land.

The TrailerSailors cruise would be great, but my pal from Sac can't get off 'till August..
