tilt/trim motor

When I bought my secondhand X boat a while back the tilt/trim motor up under my honda 50's mounting bracket looked kind of like a rusty tin can. Some loose flaking but not too bad. It managed to stay alive for another year and a half of salt water trailering before refusing to tilt or trim any more. At least it expired while the boat was moored in my side yard instead of during a weekender. My outboard was 9 years old.

New motor, any O rings, several hundreds of dollars, various machine shops and mechanics repairing seized fasteners and at least four weekends later It's now repaired, repainted, and tilting and trimming again. Yipee.

Add to your "stuff to take a look at" list taking some time to look under your motor bracket (motor up) at the tilt/trim unit if you get a chance. The little tin can on the left of the support strut is the electric drive motor and when it corrodes sufficiently fixing it can be a $250 to $1700 proposition. If yours still looks good do whatever you can to help spare the steel exterior from the elements. (Wax, marine lube, etc) I don't believe the outboard makers use any anti-seize on the trim motor fasteners when they assemble them, guess it's bad for new motor sales. :)
