Don't let the snow bend your mast!

I know this has been talked about and I think I remember Bill saying he sells one mast a year to someone whose cover had enough snow on it to damage the mast. I thought mine was OK because I had a support in the middle made from a PVC pipe. We came back into town to find major snow on the cover and the PVC pipe partially buckled. I was worried for the mast and pulled the cover off. I might be lucky this time though, it looks like it probably survived OK. I'll probably just leave the cover off.

Ya no kidding, you guys got hammered down near DEN.

Got a couple of my flts in there just before the white stuff hit the fan, then I couldn't get um back out again....

They had to spend the night, sustained damage to the engines from snow injestion. Not enough covers to go around.

Glad to hear your mast appears OK :)

How did your pipe 'buckle'? I've seen most of these with a 4" pipe straight up into the mast - seems it would take a lot to buckle that! Or did it just fall over?

I didn't use the "solid" type pipe because I couldn't buy a short piece like I wanted so I bought a long piece of the cheaper drainage type pipe. It has sort of an accordian ribbed design and one side compressed kind of like those drinking straws that can be kinked.

Yes we got hit bad twice. So much for our "all weather airport," as it was advertised. Sorry for the political comment!

I have pulled my mast off for the winter, hanging in my garage. Lots of what we call Sierra Cement here. A few years ago an overnight storm dropped enough snow to shatter the windshield on the ski boat.
