Nautical . a panel on the stern of a vessel bearing its name and port of registry.

Most of you know it as a transom board. Laika has one located on the aft side of the Captains seat. Since I do sail quite a bit at night, I thought it would be a neat idea to light it up as well. This is another mod I did on my previous 26X and liked it so much I adopted it again.

The board itself is made up of the same material (at least I think it is) used as the locker covers down below. I used ~1/4 thick White, Lightweight Rigid PVC Foam that I obtained online from McMaster-Carr, and was cut to size to fit on the back of the seat. I mounted it using heavy duty (T-101 Terminator Grade) commercial Velcro, this way I can remove it if it get's damaged, or I change homeport, as I recently did. I designed the graphics and logo and sent it off to the local Sign-o-Rama to get fabricated. They did my registration numbers. The Logo, Name and Home Port were applied the same way you apply registration numbers.

I really love LED technology now that is becoming more and more mainstream. A simple stroll through West Marine usually get's what you need, if not a little "Google" will do too. The white LED Utility Strip from West Marine fits this application perfectly. I just mounted it up in the recess using #6 Stainless Steel Oval Head Screws, Finishing Washers, and nuts in the center, and approx centered from top to bottom. It provides nice "recessed" lighting for the transom board.

Another plus for this mod, I found that it really makes for neat mood/cockpit courtesy lighting at night. Bright enough to see what you're doing, but not an issue for your night vision.

I placed it over the hole closed by the plate hiding the winch bolts. The main problem here was to route the wiring to the panel. Just now there is no separat switch besides that at the light itself. Published by: MS Classifieds
