Turning a Vintage Mac 25 into a comfortable long term cruiser

Published date: February 11, 2013
  • Boat Type: Boat Type

The swing keel MacGregor 25 fit our needs perfectly for a fun to sail, reasonably priced, trailerable cruiser. But the stock boats available were far too spartan to live aboard in comfort. I made numerous upgrades which have given us 6 years of fun multi-week cruising:
- 23 gal fresh water storage and presurized water system
- Marine head with 30 gal. holding tank
- Galley with mahogany cabinetry, sink and faucet, alcohol stove, and plenty of countertops and storage
- Larger dining table
- 110 volt shore power system with battery charger and recepticles
- New 12 volt system with added lights
- GPS, VHF radio, and depth sounder
- Furling jib, mainsail pre-feeder, and other rigging upgrades

I highly suggest this relatively cheap modification! We added an electric faucet (small pump in-line) controlled at the faucet by a turn knob, not by a button. The button ones mean you have to hold the button down, where the knob one works just like ...

I replaced the starboard water tank with a better one (flexible type) which is now located below the cooler chest. The filling pipe goes below the headroom through the closet in the headroom and up on deck. You see the filling fitting on the picture....
