Mast/Furler Transport Configuration

I have a 2000 26X with mast crutch in the steering pedestal. For long distance trailering I remove the spreaders and spiral wrap all the stays, shrouds, halyards, etc., to the mast. Also, I added a U-bolt to the top of mast (I also use this attachment point for a 'safety forestay' when sailing) and move the forestay/furler attachment up to this U-bolt which enables the furling drum to rest under the bow pulpit instead of cantilevering in front. Also, I removed the stop bolt from the mast crutch in the steering pedestal and allow the crutch to lower to the cockpit floor (it rests on a 0.5" masticated rubber pad to distribute load and absorb shocks). When commissioning for sailing I simply lift the mast crutch to the higher position and insert a philips screwdriver in the hole to support (to enable reinstalling spreaders). Lastly, I fabricated a center support at the mast step which (with eye screws and lynch pins) provide attachment points for the boom and MR pole. A short length of chain supports the other end of boom and furling drum under the mast pulpit. The mast is nearly horizontal in this configuration and makes for worry-free trailering. Another advantage is I can reach and remove the windex on top of mast from the stern without a ladder. Lastly, with the boom and MR pole topside, there is more room below for Walmart camping enroute to your cruising area. This is a lot of work if only trailering a few miles - but when trailering several hundred miles - it is well worth the effort.
