Head - urine diverting
- Boat Type: Illinois, MacGregor 26X, Boat Type
My 26X had the typical liquid chemical toilet which was cumbersome to use and embarrassing to carry down the dock at marina. Tried using a 5-gal bucket with kitty litter but the smell was an issue. I built a 'urine diverting' head to reduce smell which was successful as well as other user-friendly benefits. Height (top of seat) improvement: Mod 18", Std residential 16", Handicap 17"-19", liquid chemical 11.5". Weight: lighter than liquid chemical by 20lbs (no blue liquid). Smell: virtually no smell if mummify #2 with lime and spray 5% vinegar solution in #1 catch basin after use. I switched to garden lime (from kitty litter) which is lower cost and faster acting (pic shows lime in container beside head). No embarrassment carrying tote on dock as it looks like a storage box and is light. In addition to head refuse I use for galley waste (bones, fat, peels, etc) that I do not want to float in the anchorage or in waste basket attracting flies - lime will dry and mummify them. Seat is solid and comfortable. If there is a leak in one of the containment vessels, it is still contained in the Schafer base.
Components: #1 container is 2.5gal water container (Kroger grocery), #2 container Sterilite 3.4gal waste basket (liner not shown in pic for clarity), Housing parts: Schafer #EF4320 (base), #EFR4070 (collar), #EFD43 (lid). Urine diverter basin from eBay. Connection between Schafer collar and seat is starboard (no wood).
