Here's a real HIGH TECH autohelm.... Sometimes I am sailing alone, have the boat going straight & even, & want to go down below for a few minutes (or maybe just for a beer). I have put one of the little eye-straps below the steering wheel, and I run a bungee from there, around the bottom of the steering wheel a time or two, then back to the eye strap. Voila! - the wheel stays where I put it, and I am free to roam about the boat for a while.
