Outboard Shaft Length?

Post by Cam »

I am purchasing a new Mac M. I am still debating what 50/60 hp motor to get. I like the Honda because it is a Honda and it is light, i like the Merc Bigfoot as the are designed to push around a pontoon boat so they seem ideal for the Mac (also the upgrade to 60 hp for a few hundred bucks is also appealing) and as of yesterday i have become a little interested in the E-TEC.

I know it is mainly personal preference but any comments would be appreciated.

Oh yeh, what size shaft should i ask for when ordering the outboard and what prop should i get?

Thanks

I just ordered a :macm: with a 90hp ETEC. The shaft length is 20". as for the prop, they are going to try several to get the right rpms and speed.

I have the 50 hp bigfoot with a 14 x 10 SS prop. Very nice at the dock and displacement speeds.

My decision was based on what I wanted to do with the boat. That is full time cruising - heavly loaded boat and at displacement speeds mostly.

Cruising areas is South Fl and Bahamas, thus the SS prop.

Id go with the 60 or 75 HP Bigfoot 4 stroke. EFI makes the fuel economy and season to season running excellent.

Check how close your servicing dealer on any engine is btw.

I am leaning towards the Honda 50 or Bigfoot 60. I have dealers within 1/2 hour of my house and they service as well. I noticed the bigfoot has a bigger battery charging capacity. Also, prices are within a few hundred dollars of each other. What to do? What to do?

You can't go wrong with either. You will enjoy a higher thrust prop at the dock. The Mer 50 has 4 cyliners, if one goes bad you still have the others.

E-TEC 60

I would go with the E-tec 60hp. MacGregor must have figured they are the best thing since white bread. Of course I may be prejudiced.

Replaced an extra long shaft Evinrude 9.9 4 str with an extra long shaft honda 9.9 on my X. Both have kept the prop fully in the water and driving in 3-6 ft waves....Ron

The 60 Merc is looking the goods at the moment. Although i seem to be changing my decision like my underwear (50 Honda is still tempting). Thank you all for your ideas and comments.

Don't even think about getting an outboard without electronic fuel injection!

So you are saying you agree with my choice Moe and Catigale of a BF 60 HP?

Yes, had one on the Whaler. Would also recommend the Evinrude E-TEC 60HP if you're inclined to go two-stroke. Both good motors.

If you are a pleasure only sailor like me I would go for the 75HP Bigfoot and take the weight penalty.
