Bzzzzzt - wrong!!It is kind of an american thing.....
I think there are many places where the male retreat is found in either the garage, or the back shed. Here in Oz, they are holy places, where non-males are only ever tolerated, and never invited.
Some excerpts from a recent documentary on them:
"BLOKES AND SHEDS": A shed is a place where you can leave a 5/8 spanner on the corner of a bench, and know that some years later it will still be there unless you choose to move it. It's a place where the whole world is whirling around you, you know, with an increasing degree of anxiety and speed. And it's somewhere that's a still place, you know. It's like the centre of the cyclone. There's a lot of stuff that people criticise men and sheds for - that it is insular behaviour. It's cutting themselves off.
It's part of Australian culture. Blokes need somewhere to go, other than just sit outside the back of the house. They have to fiddle, do something, wreck something. They'll fix the car first. That always requires the shed.
A shed is a lifetime's memories for somebody. Well, upon the death of a person, only then will the family find things that indicate who that person really was. It can be a union ticket from 1933. Or the photos of the kids that the kids never knew how much that father treasured. A shed can be, you know, a palace of unfinished dreams. The life you could have had. And some people get there, some people don't.
