Cruising Costs

Post by eric3a »

I"ve been playing that game, trying to guestimate cruising expenses.

Have a look at cruising expenses

Based on that and other sites, and personal experience when I was living on my boat, I believe we could easily make it with $2,000 per month.
Boat fully paid and an emergency fund pre-setup for those extreme cases (need to urgently get on the first plane out, and only 1st class is available kind of thing).
And that should allow for enough touristy stuff, decent good maintenance, etc...

I will be very interested in seeing your experience.... Because at my current guesstimated level, I can retire today!

BINGO...that is what it is all about. Funny thing, once we made the decision that we were actually going...and became "short timers" on the job our ENTIRE attitude changed for the BETTER! It's like a huge burden has been lifted and you can work just as hard at work, have just as long days of the grind, but they just don't get to you anymore! Granted I will have to come back form our Cruise and go back to work....ah...hate to even think about it, but I want to be able to help the kids out with their school costs and to do that, will require plugging back into the "system" I detest, but we will do it for them and do it with a smile nor a complaint. I already know what I want to do....but haven't told anyone yet, not even my wife, but I am just as excited to come back and get started on that, as I am to cast off….I’ll leave it there for now.

I agree eric, $2K/month could easily be enough and still provide for boat work and some frills. When you start to figure out all the monthly costs you have that simply VANISH when you are living on a boat the monthly amount you need really goes down. It also shows you all the things you have in your life that are fluff and not really needed to be perfectly happy….it sure did for us when we started making the budget and getting serious about making it happen.

Also, from our brief time in Mexico, you can indeed live both cheaply and well and that’s just the small parts we saw, not even counting Central America…now the Med…that’s a different story, especially with the dollar in the dumps….but what can ya do?

Now that we totally hijacked this thread…..opps….but I could go on and on about it. It was about two years ago now that I made my post here on the Mac Bilge stating that we had a CRAZY IDEA and here we are now two yrs later….actually starting the process of boxing up “things” and giving other things away….it is scary as hull and exhilarating at the same time, strange. Maybe I’ll go look for that original thread…would be cool to relive what I was thinking two years ago with all my friends here...Liberals and Conservatives!

Found it....here is the Thread that started it all!

Cruising cost = as much as you do not want to spend and still be happy. Each person is different. 2g's woud be nice but I am hopeing to get by with less than $ 500 per month and of course the supplies that I have on board already and a new boat that does not require much maintance.

Well I am not CRUISING but I am retired. . .
We live outside Chicago ( not the cheapest place to live and heat etc.)
My pension which includes free medical is only about $2,500 a month and we live just fine. True we have very few bills except those that you cannot get away from on a month by month existence. We are not touching any of our dividends for now. True when we want a $$$ toy or tool or to make a trip we reach into the mad money account that is there for just such purposes.
I would be looking at the major regular expenses.
In no particular order.......
1.Fuel you do have some to a lot of control over that.
2. Food again most of that is under your control.
3. Refrigeration again its all up to what you learn to live with.
4. Paper Work for each port of entry.
5. Entertainment right down to how often do you need to mix with others at the clubs and bars.
6. repairs and maintenance/ Newer, Best quality, Simple .
7. Here is one I read about often and everyone has their own spin.
Vessel insurance $$$$ and can you even get it and afford it. At the marina where we slip our boat if you want to even overnight you need P.O.I. proof of Insurance.
As Eric has already stated and I cannot imagine anyone not having an emergency fund to get home with ASAP. One loop hole here might still be the DAN master plan as they cover your home trip for any emergency deemed necessary as long as you own a home in the USA.
For me I have found numerous vehicles available that guarantee 6.5% monthly income for life. The money is still yours to withdraw part of or all at any time.
So even $300K would give you $1625 a month before taxes.
The Only Hard Part. . . finding a wife or S.O. welling and desiring to Share The Dream!
I really doubt the money is the hard part for any of us on this board.
By All Means, if its doable for me, it must be easy as falling off the pier for the rest. IMHO

Working out the detials on how to go cruising will stop a lot of people from going weather it being retired or just taking some time off from work.

It is best to invest in low maintance items. A house can take a lot of time going back and forth from the boat and stocks can requite a good communication line. People do it all here. Me I just made ehough money to go cruising for a couple of years and then back to work and start all over again.

Ive got these two fledlings that I have to turn into eagles for the next 8 years, so my plans are still some time away. I dont have the courage to pull off what Rich and Lori are doing, yet. Im still catching up from the money I didnt make in grad school, but we keep life simple and cheap so we can do that someday. We might just stay in the Great Lakes summers as our retirement though.

You could do far worse Cat.

Endless areas to explore, all accesable from your doorstep.

Heck, take the great loop south for the winter months once in a while as well.

It's all here, waiting for you when you are ready.

Who knows, by then I may have my 2 girls off an soaring also, so I might be hooking up with you for a multi week cruise of the lakes.

One has to have something to work towards.

To simulate Liveaboard :

1.Move everything into your smallest bedroom. (40 feet is more like a 2 bedroom two bath efficiency apartment).
2.Use plywood to block off everything in your bathroom except a 3' x 3' square over your toilet. Use the shower in the EIGHTH house down the street for bathing to simulate walking from your boat to the marina showers down the dock.
3.Use a laundromat to wash all your clothes. Park your car a minimum of 300' from the laundromat to simulate hauling the clothes and stuff up the dock. Do laundry at LONG odd intervals, only when you would be in a marina that HAS a laundry. Take a cab to a strange laundry across town to simulate stopping at a marina without one or with one that is broken.
4.Seal off your kitchen and cook all your meals on a camp stove in the little bedroom so you can experience sleeping in a boat where someone burned dinner.
5.Get a humidifier and run it wide open in the bedroom for practice in "mildew control".
6.Shut the breaker off to your water heater, air conditioner and any other electrical luxuries...leaving only one 20A circuit energized.
7.Use more plywood to block off 3/4 of the closet so you can practice storing stuff in lockers. Cut off your TV cable and watch TV on rabbit ears.
8.Park your car at the same house you take showers (8 houses away). (It is a schlep, but no worse than a high rise condo dweller).
9.Put in a Change-of-Address card and have all your mail sent to a friend's house 20 miles away.
10.Rebuild your toilet once a month taking apart all the plumbing and putting it back together.
11.Every time you do anything electrical, leave your lawn mower running outside your bedroom window for "The Generator Effect".
12.Take the screens off your windows and leave them open so every fly, mosquito and gnat in the yard has easy access to your "cabin".
13.Use a boat battery to power all your "stuff" through an inverter. Charge it only once a week to simulate being in a marina.
Give that 8th neighbor $7/foot every 30 days.
14.When you fill up your car, say with $15 in gas, give the 8th neighbor an extra $15 to simulate marina gas prices.
15.Don't go to WalMart. Buy all your supplies at the most expensive 7-11 you can find. If you MUST go to any other store, use public transportation or call a cab...livaboards don't have cars on their boats.
16.Paint your house, or pay the most expensive painting company in town to paint your house, every year. Use the most expensive paint you can find. Paint the bottom floor twice to simulate putting anti-fouling paint on a hull.
17.Take your car to the most expensive dealership in town. Have him overhaul the engine and do whatever he wants to it every year. Make believe he is the ONLY place this can be done within 100 miles. Be nice and smile at him. (Good work can be found at good rates. But the more you do yourself, the better. And boats, unlike houses, DEMAND that you not defer repairs or regular maintenance. It could cost you your life).

Still interesting Liveaboard ???
I recommend open this web and read all from A to Z...

Funny Alex. . . . but all so true.
Not that bad alone but finding a spouse as I posted earlier is the trick.
One who actually wants to make the sacrifices to make it happen.
I will consider myself very fortunate if my sweetheart goes for the 2 month Bahamas Vacation! A live aboard boat is Not a Mac of coarse.....

Alex- ones gets used to not making those problems happen. Another anology can be made about living in town. One just has to be willing to live with life afloat and make the best of it or realize what it is.

A lot of little things really make it better.

Cruising Costs

Post by jetta01 »

Cruising 101, by Sullivan and Donnelly is a good book on the subject. They do a 16 month cruise in Mexico and take you through all the topics of interest, inclucing budget.
