KITES

Post by SURV1969 »

Okay, nix the question about oversailing the front stay with drifters and spinnakers.

How about using a kite-sail?

Has anyone used one?

Has anyone seriously pondered one?

Kite use

Post by maddmike »

I used a standard North Sails Kiteboard kite, (made at the Sri Lanka facility), in June of 2004 to sail downwind from Luperon in the DR to Grand Truk. Had the mast down at the time. Lot of work, lot of fun, didn't seem real practical at the time. But, now that I'm down here in AZ running Cuben Fiber (North recently bought the company), I'm thinking of a Cuben kite specifically for Zeno's Arrow; that should be interesting, if I ever get time to put it together! :)

I always breathe a sigh of relief when you post, MM...when you go quiet on me I have visions of your white hulled X stuck up at the Hilary Step...

Now, now, guys

I'm still alive and well, but do have to go do the "W" word from time to time.

Speaking of 'Hillary', I just got a nice e-mail from Peter Hillary (Ed's son-who I've done a couple of expeditions with). He said they read one of my stories about Ed while we were on a trip to the North Pole with Neil Armstrong and Steve Fossett back in '85 at his memorial service. So I guess I can tell it here just for fun:

There was a lady along on that trip named Betty Wolfe from Arizona who had a pair of arctic gloves that turned out to have the thumbs sewn in backwards. Needless to say Bette took quite a bit of funning about her 'thumbs'. Near the end of the trip Betty asked Ed Hillary to write her a note she could take to the outfitters who sold her the gloves; Ed wrote "With gloves like these I would never had made it to the summit of Mt. Everest", signed Sir Edmund Hillary, Resolute Bay NWT, April 1985. Neil Armstrong saw the note and added below Ed's comments "With gloves like these I never would have made it to the moon", Neil Armstrong, Resolute Bay April 1985. I always wondered what the guy that sold Betty those gloves thought about that!
