Dear Sailors,
I've been looking through the archives but did not find what I needed, so I apologize for asking perhaps an old question. I need to attach a couple of blocks and a deck organizer to my boat to bring halyard and reefing lines aft. The blocks will be close to the base of the mast where the deck is thick, double layered to accomodate foam, I guess. How does one drill holes through that to put bolts and basepolates to fasten the blocks to the deck. Some boats have these blocks just screwed to the deck, but...
I would appreciate your advice. Any photos are also welcome.
Cheers,
Albert

I'm not sure what kind of boat you have so this might not work on it. On my M I attached the halyard block to the mast bracket. All it takes is drilling a hole and attaching a block with a shackle. Click here for photo:Halyard Block. The photo is actually with the mast down and set on a support for trailering but you can see the block with a line through it.
It works great and puts no stress on the deck.

What he said ... avoid drilling holes whenever possible!
Most here have shackled blocks to the mast step. Drilling is necessary for stoppers or clutches, near the cockpit. In those cases, use precautions to prevent crushing the deck laminate and prevent water intrusion. Have you browsed thru the MacMods pages? ... lots of pictures & discussion over there.
P.S. always a good idea to add your boat model into the Location field of your personal profile. Helps put your questions in context for readers.

I have a Mac 25 but believe with regard to your question there should be no significant difference. That being said, when I ran my halyards aft I purchased a stainless steel prefab plate with upturned and pre-drilled sides that I installed under my mast step, so it is sandwiched between the step and the deck. The edges stick out from the sides and are turned up at a 45 degree angle and have several holes to which blocks are attached. I found this plate through a link in a thread on this site re lines led aft. I presume this would also work on the power sailors. The only work required was removing the step, using it as a template to drill the holes in the plate, then reinstalling it over the plate.
