Zeno's Arrow - Hawaii Bound (hopefully)

mike,i saw my first set of North sails,they were on a cat that i was on in Antigua,we went out on one of those day trips for snorkelling

the only thing that i could get my hands on to sail myself was a hobie

hows the preparations going for Hawaii?

You certainly do nice wood work and seeing your rudder mods and WW's comments, I have to wonder if I should be cutting Alum or learning to sail a whole lot better fast. It does look warm and inviting with your paneling. bright decor and hatch treatments.

Hawaii Bound Update ??

Indeed, Whimzee did sail Hawaii ... maybe even still.
However, she arrived on-board the deck of a ship ...
though that's not apparent from the earlier post.

Whimzee returned from Hawaii in 2003. She spent 4 years in the Pacific Northwest and is now in Virginia Beach.
Both trips, TO and AND from Hawaii were on the deck of a much larger ship.

We never sailed her out of sight of either the Ko'olau or Waianae mountains while in Hawaii.

Glancing at this again reminded me of the origin of Zeno's Arrow and its paradox - "If everything when it occupies an equal space is at rest, and if that which is in locomotion is always occupying such a space at any moment, the flying arrow is therefore motionless." Aristotle, Physics VI:9, 239b5

He went on to say "'Presently' or 'just' refers to the part of future time which is near the indivisible present 'now' ('When do you walk? 'Presently', because the time in which he is going to do so is near), and to the part of past time which is not far from the 'now' ('When do you walk?' 'I have just been walking'). "

So to Hawaii Bound (hopefully) and not to far from the 'now', I add God's speed and fair winds wherever you are in space, Mike.

Hi all!

Just a quick update on Maddmike (me) and Zeno's Arrow. As most know I was trying to get to Hawaii a year eariler than origionally planned because a 'window' at work opened to make the attempt possible. However, sometimes as the name of my boat implies I only get about halfway to somewhere before my life makes an unexpected turn. In this case it was an offer from Cubic Tech in Mesa, Arizona, the company that makes Cuben Fiber as used by North in high end racing sails among other things. To cut to the chase 'Maddmike' is no longer at North Sails or working on 3DL projects; He is now V.P. for Business Development at Cubic Tech and Zeno's Arrow is happly in Arizona making ready to live on Lake Powell. After 13 years I did manage for the first time to hit something with the boat other than the bottom on a river; yep, sorry to say Zeno's Arrow tried to take out a gas pump in Wickenburg, AZ. complements of Capt. Mike's less than skillful approach to a tight 'pickup truck' fueling dock (also know as a gas station to most in this land locked state). Both the boat and gas pump survived better than MM's ego. So for the near future, Zeno's Arrow and MM will be sailing the beautiful though much less extensive waters behind Glenn Canyon Dam; might even consider bigger twin engines just for fun.

I bet Lake Powell is sure different than the kind of water that you have been sailing in The scenery is...well kind of bland; majestic at first when you seen it but day in and day out it can get boring. I lived in AZ for two yrs, well was stationed there, (long ago and far, far away). I spent quite a few wkends as it was the only big water to be had. The good news is if you are into hiking some there are plenty of canyons to be explored right along the shores. You can belly up, drop anchor and and hike back in to many of them. Water is/was super clear and good for diving but then again there is not much to see. Hope u enjoy
