LED lights on 2002 Trailer

Post by Kelly Hanson East »

The light control unit (converts tail light signals to trailer light signals)on my VW packed up and has died - new one is 60 USD from dealer.

Researching LED tail lights, Ive found them for 44 USD - I just got them and tried them without a control unit to see if they will have low enough draw to be used direct without a DC powered control unit.

....and the verdict is they do work!!

So for about the same money (44+15 for the converter plug) I get LED lights and a simpler circuit.

Another plus for LED lights is that they don't fail due to vibration. I had a heck of a time with the side-lights mounted on the fenders - the filaments kept going bad because of the vibration. I've replaced them with LED's and they are both brighter and have yet to fail.
