Honda Throttle Control

Post by tompolak »

Hi,

I am a new Mac X owner (2001) with a Honda 50HP engine. I have an issue with the throttle control unit. The handle for that unit is very loose (but will not pull all the way out). I opened the plastic cover on the arm of the throttle (round cover with the Honda logo on it). I noticed that their is not a bolt in where it looks like there should be one. I did find that it is threaded for a 7mm bolt. My question is, is this the bolt that holds the throttle arm tight? I found with it being so loose, shifting gears is a nightmare. We were out on Lake Michigan this weekend and I was having a really hard time trying to shift into neutral and reverse (it seemed there was no resistance and allowed me to just shift into the other gears without any warning). I found that to be because of the handle being loose and not stopping me before I could put it into neutral. I also found the idle speed was WAY to high to shift into gears, but I found where to adjust that (in another forum).

Any info on that throttle control unit would be appericated.

It may help those who are more informed than I, if you stated what year your Honda is, and if you could post any good close up pictures.

If your setup is similar to mine....you'll find the bolt to tighten the control arm on the other side of the throttle/gearshift control unit..the side that butts up against the plexiglass. In order to reach the nuts that fasten it, you have to remove the plexiglass on the other side of the steering consol. This will allow you get a socket (or wrench) on the nuts that attach the control unit to the consol. Once you pull the control unit away you will see the bolt that tightens the arm. I would suggest a little Locktight (the semi-permanent variety) or similar product on the bolt or otherwise it will wiggle loose again with time.
