Sailing on McGregors throughout the World

I know the subject is very heavy but finally it is discribing my idea !
I' m living in Southgermany far away (it's a German far away, 100+miles )from the water with a in former times and now with a on a trailer behind my home. I'm used to sail all over in Europe during the summer month espacially on inland waters. But doe to the weather unfortunately there is actually no place in Europe where it were a good idea to sail during the wintermonth with a boat like a:macx: .
When I read in this forum about the American folks planning trips for the Christmast time around Florida, California and to tho Bahamas I become quite jealous .
I've been several times to Florida during this times aswell however I could only look towards the sea from my rented car .Might be I have seen the one or another of You standing at shores in Europe too !
On one of this occasions I had the idea wouldn't it be a big advantage for all participating MG-owner if they make it eachother possible to sail on a Mac when they travel through a foreighn country . As the local MG-owner should be familiar with local situation as far as traveling is concerned he could assist the traveling party in giving hints where to stay (hotel/motel), sightseeing and other stuff. I'm not thinking of a MG-owner pool, my idea is based on personal apointments between parties.

How do You feel about this idea, possibly there is allready something in existance taking care of this? Let me know!

I have taken advantage of the generosity of a couple of the members of this esteemed group and sailed with them here in the UK. Fantastic opportunity for this Southern Yank!

This board is a great way to not only learn more about Macs and sailing but to make great friends.

I know that I will almost always be willing/able to take anyone out in my boat that is visiting my home waters...just not for the next year or so as I am stationed away from my boat.

I have had The Highlander (John) from the eastern side of Canada sail with me on mine on the west coast and he enjoyed it. I am not sure when or where I will ever be able enjoy sailing with another Mac owner elsewhere, but I am always open to taking someone out at my end.
I sail the San Juans & Gulf Islands in the Pacific Northwest, beautiful during summer.

I bounced a few ideas like yours around in my head some time ago and believe it would/could be a great idea but never took it any further, I still think there are many possiblities but could see liability or insurance as a problem eg here it could be deemed a commercial proposition and any arrangements covered as such.
Often thought how it would be great if we could swap boats or pool them in other countries but there could be be problems with navigation etc so probably being able to jump on board with a local would be great eg I would have loved to have someone come aboard for a month or so this year and the wife would have been even happier as she would have gone home to the grandkids or camped ashore.
There are as many possibilities as there are other uses for our boats but in my case I don't see myself travelling out of this country as there is just too much to see and do here for at least three full lifetimes.
Look forward to seeing how this turns out, we see a lot of German backpackers out here and you can usually pick them by the cloud of dust coming at you irrespective of the road conditions .

If anyone is heading for the West of Oz, let me know. I already own several members of this Board a beer or more for the invaluable technical advice I've been given, and could see huge advantages is getting some hands on advice from someone who sails a Mac in another environment.
I cant offer Boblee's experience in the remote wilds of Oz, but I am in the most remote city of its size in the world.

You are right, if one gets on board with a local boat-owner would avoid any problem as far as the local law is concerned. In this case I don't see any liability, law- or insurance problem. Navigation should not be that problem, I like most to sail with a map in areas I havn't been before. Espacially in Australia navigation must be easy, You just continue in tone dirction or the other and You will for sure come back to Your starting point , little bit of time is needed!

To make it more specific my idea is that everybody who is interested in this matter could offer a certain trip in a certain time.
For instance I could offer sailing and motoring tours around the Berlin lakes with the opportunity to visit the town between end of May and September 2009. (Just one of more possibilities)
This first anouncement should be just a general statement. All details are than matter of personal contacts.

Might be the administrator of this pages is supporting this activeties and will provide a place in the MG-pages where the offers can be collected/published.

Beside to give the opportunity to sail in different countries I'm aiming on a second target .
I suppose there are more boat owners whos Admiral is more a General and doesn't like boating at all . People most single handed sailing like me might have here the opportunity to find eachother for sailing together. How about that?

I am offering , during the summer months mind you ..offering on advanced notice only .....cause I charge 350$ a day for this...the opportunity to spend a day to a week on my luxurious fully loaded with full enclosure, slipped in an ultra private 68 place marina will full services in one of the most beautiful villages in Québec, in exchange for the same amount of time on an M in florida this winter.

You will be sailing 45 minutes away from Québec City as seen on this picture and 45 minutes away from a 2 kilometre sand bar enclosed within a circle of islands on the ST Lawrence river ( just like the Bahamas but in summer and in Canada).

The Highlander approach works with me too! Any Mac owner coming to Québec City give me a pm , if I'm available, ( since I retired I have less time in a day cause I sleep in just about everyday ) we will go for a sail and a cognac afterwards. Actually their are only 2 things I'm interested in doing in the morning besides sleeping and sailing is one of them
Unfortunately the Cognac bottle is empty so the boat has now been winterized till may so only 1 thing left to do in the morning

Keeping the boat in Florida has been put off for a year for a bunch of good reasons ...the main one being family responsibilities the secondary one being the Canadian dollar is only worth 77cents the third one being since I retired and bought the boat I'm home less often than when I worked and the Admiral and the kids wants me home more . When I bought the Mac and made my plans the dollar was at par ....that was 6 months ago.... just incredible......... and I have to do all the jobs around the house that I ignored all summer cause I was sailing.

My son & I spent 4 days on the Rideau lakes last summer.
We launched at Smith's Falls on a natural ramp - no concrete, no dock. Only a SeaDoo or a Mac could pull that off.
It's a marvelous corner of the country to be sure.

Wonderful historical ambience, especially around the locks, military block houses etc.

Sailing opportunities are very limited though.
I left the mast at home, and except for a brisk wind one afternoon on big Rideau, it was not missed.


Bring fishing rods. (AND Ontario anglers license - Fish & Wildlife enforcement is very active)
