Broken Bow Light

Post by c130king »

I have finally made it back to the good ol' U S of A, at least for two weeks. Saturday I did many of the boat projects that I wanted to do and yesterday, after 18 months of sitting high and dry in a storage yard under a tarp, we launched and sailed Konig in 15 mph winds for about 3 hours. It was fantastic.

Anyway, during launch, I accidently broke my bow light (like I would have done it on purpose... 8) ). The red/green lens cover broke off and sank. The bulb is still there.

Where can one get a replacement for that piece? Is this a standard size that can be obtained at West Marine (just down the road)?

Thanks,
Jim

broke mine off too. I did the Duane Dunn mod of placing separate lights on the side just in front of the windows. Wires drop down and under the sole and tie in just forward of the port galley. Darn bow light was just in the wrong place for stepping, anchor rode, etc. Best easy mod I ever did. Search for Duanes mod for particulars. I got the Perko lights on Ebay for 10 bucks for the set.

I believe Blue Water Yachts in Seattle sells a replacement bow light for $22. They have a new on-line relacement parts catalogue.

Definately move the bow light. You've got 2 weeks right? Really, it took my about 30 minutes to mount my lights, and 2 hours to run the lines. One of the easier mods I've done. Now, another interesting proposition is the all in one position/Anchor light that we can put on top of out mast. Hmmm..

Either way, i went with the LED version. Uses way fewer amps for those evening sails!

Guys,

Thanks for the responses. At this time I do not have the time to modify the lights...I just want to replace my bow light...maybe a future project. Found the light on BWY...but I only have 7 days left to sail before I return to the land of Fish n' Chips...so I am hoping to buy a light at the local West Marine. Can anyone point me towards the correct light at WM? I don't have the original light...it is swimming with the fishes...so I don't remember what it looked like.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

I just ran out, climbed under the tarp, and took a couple of shots of the bow light on my 05 M. It looks like the #3562 Bi-Color light on page 460 of the 2008 WM catalog. Check it out. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/st ... SiteSearch

I hope this helps.

That was what was used on our X and probably is the same on the M. Doesn't surprise me WM charges $32.

Defender has it for $15 vs a list price of $23.

Maybe WM will price match.

Capt. Steve,

What are LED lights bright enough for this and which ones would you recommend for replacement? Also, can you help me find the Duane Dunn Mod page for this. Many thanks.

Duane's boating page is at: Duane' Boat Page. Scroll down for the mods page.

This forum is a great resource, if utilized. Check out the resources tab at the top. You'll find Duane's page listed under Resources > Sailing Links > Personal Mac Pages. Lots of info up there.

Thanks Rich...I didnt use LEDS ( I dont think Duane did either) the nav lights are only used underway so there should be power available, charging the batteries.

As a backup, I'd also recommend getting one of those flashlights with the green/red front that you can attach by clamp to the pulpit
It's a JIC that can help get you home safely.
