ANCHOR RUST DID I BLOW IT

Post by irayone »

I tried to make a job simple. I got a new Delta anchor... The anchor didn't fit on the roller so I had to drill another hole in the anchor ..No problem....Instead of removing the anchor I decided to drill it in place...No problem.....works great....Mean while the next day.. rust spots appeared on my anchor locker hatch...ooops...tiny rust spots all over...I tried everything.....compound...wax...ajax... bleach.....HELP!!!!!!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS????
THE MORAL OF THE STORY.....DON'T DO ANYTHING THE EASY WAY.......

Irayone,

Try using steel wool to get the rust off...It will usually take it right off.

Good luck,

Don't forget to treat the new anchor hole with some "cold" galvanizing paint to help avoid more rust spots in the future. On the removal of rust from gelcoat I have found that the rust removers that are sold at the check-out counter of your local hardware story work great. But do add some wax to the affected area after rust is removed. Brass wool is in my openion a better choice for anything boat related if in a saltwater enviroment.

Yep...most any hardware store. If you don't see it...ask the guys there and tell them your problem. It comes in small bottles -vs- gallon jugs.

Your anchor was hot dipped galvanized and where you drilled opened it to bare steel. that cut needs to by protected. The rust spots on your deck now are a result of the fine drill dust you left behind of steel.

Cold G-paint can be bought in 1 quart or best for your needs is the spray version. The rest is good to use on that rusty trailer.Image

Never, Never, NEVER use steel wool on anything that will ever see water! As noted earlier, use only brass wool. Take any steel wool you have and remove it from the boat - far, far from the boat - and never let it on board ever again.

Using steel wool will only give you more of same thing you have now - fine little chips of iron that will rust and discolor your boat, and you'll be forever chasing them out.

The best thing to clean up that rust with is some "Lime-A-Way" or "CLR" - either one will work well and are very mild - they won't hurt your fiberglass one bit. Apply it to the rusty spots, wait 15-20 minutes, then just wash it off - stain gone.
