Your sails look really new and clean. Are they origonal? Mine have some stains and show their age. Also I notice yours say V222, while mine say V22

Hey Pete,

Thanks for the compliment, but I have to admit that the picture has done wonders for those sails' appearance. They're both the original 37-year-old sails that came with the boat. The genoa does have a few stains, and isn't bright white like it appears in pictures---but it saw very little use over the course of its life and is still in good, crisp shape. My mainsail, however, is worn out beyond belief. It's stained, worn thin, cupped badly (sags in the middle), and has a dozen little spots covered with small pieces of sail repair tape. I've made-do with it for the last four years, but it's definitely going to have to be replaced by next season.

As far as the "222" and "22" marks on our sails.....I'm not sure. This link (http://www.wadler.org/boatMac/production_years.php) shows that the V22 was made from 1970-71, and the V222 was made from 1971-82. Yet, you say your sail reads "22," and I've seen other Venture 22's without the "222" designation as well (all newer than my 1972 model).

My Mac 22 seems to be self-limiting. At anything much over 15 - 20 degrees, I start to lose rudder control and she will round up.

Regarding my 26M, I feel that she gets in her groove between 20-25 degrees, maybe even 30 at times. I sail solo most of the time, though; maybe if I had some crew weight to help weigh down the windward rail I'd like 15-20 degrees better.

I let her heel as far as the wind will take her as long as I can maintain my heading, helm control and good speed. Once I lose either of those 3, it's time to reef. Funny thing is, it's not always the same angle. Sometimes it's 30, sometimes 45. Of course, when it's blowing 40 knots and I'm reefed down to the max, I just make the best of it. Motoring home, not an option Unless there's a mutiny aboard or kids. But we won't go there, right Geoff?

So when I can go play I like to have a little fun. We're around 25 here if memory serves (I'm taking the picture from the bow).



I've sustained 35 for a short period for kicks. When I'm single handing I usually keep it around 15 to 20 but it depends on the conditions of course.

I can affirm that it´s not allways the same angle. In my opinion it depends on the position of the boom. As far as I remember my is under better controll with the bow to the port side.

Our '83 Mac 25 has been over enough for the keel to "thump" back down when we came upright...we then put the lock down bolt in place!

It only matters to performance, any heel over 15-20 degrees will become a negitive for performance.
You will know how much it can heel when the gunnel is awashed before you take in water, by that time it will be to late to correct.

OK so I know heal reduces speed, but at the same time I wanted to get a feel of the boat and how it behaved when healed over. so it was gusty Sunday morning and I pulled the sails at tight so I could get her healed over pritty good. At one point I could see water comming in around the chain plate . (I have not sealed them yet) It wanted to round up but I held it there at long as i could. Then my sailing buddy suggested we take the sails down and motor for a while.
