Sail Numbers

Post by Mike47 »

I just purchased a 1972 Venture 2-22. The main sail has a number on it. What does that stand for?

If the sail is original, the number should be the same as the one stamped on the transom (rear of boat), and is the number of boats of that model produced up to that time.

Thanks LLoyd, that is not the number on the transcom, so I guess it is not the original sail.

Most sails I see with numbers, the number is the LOA. For instance a Catalina 22 will say C22 on its main. My Mac 25 had M25, before it was removed by a PO. Not all are like this, but most seem to be.

Other than "V 222?" Probably racing numbers.

My numbers don't match the hull number. Sail number 790, hull number 791. Figure that one out. :D

Interestingly, my Boston Whaler Harpoon was the first boat on which North sails were used... so I have sail # 1!

I opened up the mainsail bag that came with my 89D and the sail has V-24 on it. I'm thinking it is off a Venture 24. Perhaps when I get my lawn in, next week or so, I will lay it out and measure it to see if it compares to that boat. It is a heavy weight sail with slugs on it.

Thanks!

Close up, a few years ago... not bad for a 1978 boat, and she still looks this good, I'm happy to say. I wish I did!

I have a '79 V22 with poptop and sail numbers:

V
22
4037

I also have a small tag that reads Macgregor Yacht Corporation. Non of that matches the numbers on the transom. If I had to guess the numbers are meaningless. Probably numbered sequentially from the sail factory.

Racing numbers don't come stock on the sail. They are typically applied by an owner. Traditionally the racing number should be the same as the hull number, but since there's not a lot of one-design racing with Macs most PHRF fleets will let you pick whatever number you want.

My sailing club just checks to make sure that number isn't in use by another boat. I chose my hull number as my racing number - 57.
