how to buy a genoa?

Post by littledevil »

its just an idea yet but what should i know if i go for it? its for 75 venture17. i have a jib and a mainsail already. i am looking for a used one so i figured i have to measure the luff of the jib that i have and get something close to that. what about the foot. how far it can go? does it go around the stays without any problem? i dont have roller furling so i cant use those that comes out of the boats with roller fuling? or is there any way to modify them and use it. thanks.

Hello,
Well, when I bought a new genny they wanted the length of the forestay and lower attachment point from the pin. Then the distance between the forward and aft ends of the jib car tracks. They also wanted a measurement from the forestay around the shrouds at spreader height by hoisting the tape measure up the stay via the halyard. All of that was to figure the value of J.

Don't know how easy it'll be to find a decent one used, but they're under $300 new.

I sailed mine for many years and only used the Genoa once, as the boat sailed great with just the jib and mainsail. The original owner (who bought the sail) used it only twice as well. My nephew is now using it as the jib finally deteriorated to the point of no return, but he doesn't like it as well as the jib. In order to use a genoa you'll need to add some track along the sides of the cockpit and some swivel cams to get any type of sheeting angle.

thanks for the replys. the genoa shown on the link seems to be decent priced. i didn' t really understand the adding track part alongside of the cockpit. swiwel cam installation wouldn't be a problem as long as i keep them close to the aft. front of that is the area we seat and usually gets really squezed. if you used it twice in your life, than makes me wonder how much i can use. i don't sail very often and when we sail we sail in strong winds. honestly i loved the way it looks when i watch other boats under genoa. thats why it grabbed my attention. thanks again.

Because of the size of the genoa, you will not be able to use the hardware that you use to sheet the jib. You will need to move the sheet hardware back to the side of the cockpit to get the proper angle with the genoa. Depending on the wind conditions, it may need to be further to the bow, or toward the stern. My 17 had a 28" piece of track on each side, and the swivel cam cleats on cars so they could be moved to the ideal sheeting angle. This is similar to how things are setup on the X and the M, so you could check one of the manuals here to get pictures and more information.
