LOOKING FOR REPLACEMENT TRAILER

Post by RHC »

I think the 3 yrs of neglect on my trailer for my 97 26X has caught up w/ me.
Extent of rust on top horizontal fo C- beam front of axle looks scary.

Anyone know of a good place to shop for used or new mac trailer?

thanks,
RHC

I sounding like a broken record here since I bought my M alumium trailer for my 2000 X. I bought it from the macgregor factory.Talk with Mike Imnon there. It has 15" tires that HOLD 5000LBS, disc brakes, f/g fenders, and an axel that it is twice the size of old X trailer one. $3000 and includes mods for the X.

You are ... what? 450 miles, a long day's drive, from Costa Mesa (down past L.A.) and the MacGregor factory?

Their trailer is going to be lighter, lower, easier to tow and easier to launch/retrieve than any aftermarket trailers. It's made for Macs, by the people who built your boat (and mine). Even though I'm really pleased with my new Sea Lion (built in New Jersey) double-axle rig, I would have driven 500 miles one-way to get a trailer like BK's instead! And I would have saved $500 or so, to boot ....

Checked out local dealer. Price is now $3.5k. Sounds like the right move, but just brainstorming: if I sell the mac, take the cash plus throw in the $3.5k, should have enough to down pmt for a 30 ft catalina in charter ownership program.

On other hand, aluminum trailer should be good for the next 10 yrs w/ no worries. decisions, decisions.

thanks for the inputs,

btw: at which location do these things give first? Maybe I should check that out closely to see if it's safe to even take it out of my dirveway.
i'm getting paranoid of what a mess it would be if it gave up on the road. is the owner liable for paying the clean up (crane, truck/trailer, labor, etc)???

thaks,

I am not sure what a chater boat ownership is but I feel partnrs on boats do not work. My last boat I had a partner and it kinda worked out but problems of who got to use it when and who did what maintenance lead to disagreements. Basically I did all the maintenve and my partner was a blind owner whoused my boat. Remember roomates when you were young, alot of hassles.

REPLACEMENT TRAILER for sale in Florida

Post by Bill at BOATS 4 SAIL »

I have a repeat customer coming up from Florida in October to pick up a new 26M.
He will be keeping his boat on a lift and will not need his trailer. It'll be in Punta Gorda, Florida.
If anyone is interested in buying a 26M aluminum trailer, with surge brakes, contact me.

Saildog,
Thanks, but that's a bit of drive from me (Northern CA).
I actually backed off from the new aluminum converted 26M trailer. Turned out to $4k out the door.
I finally found a trailer repair shop (after 1 yr searching) w/in 100mi from me. I am taking the trailer in tomorrow.
I'll find out if it's worth refurbing. If not, they build steel trailers, so they could duplicate the Mac design and reuse some of the components from my old trailer (new landing gear, tail lights, disc brakes, etc).

just dropped off my trailer at shop. they will cut off rear 3/4 of frame, scrap it and build new rear frame. will reuse same wheels & disc brakes, lights (will add center tail light to comply w/ ca law), new axle & fender. they will sandblast & repaint old steel, replace winch. All for under $1k out the door. I think I will end up w/ almost brand new trailer. Mean time, boat is in slip for a week (w/ no bottom paint!!). I hope I won't need to extend.

Might want to have them *carefully* check the tongue... Mac trailers are renowned for rusting in that area and subsequently failing. Might have them weld on some reinforcement plates in that area?
