MINI MAC FOR POOL

Post by vertex2100 »

The kids wanted their own MAC for the pool so I made one years ago from plywood covered with cloth and epoxy. They wanted the blue hull option. Got theirs before I even got mine. Great way for the kids to get use out of the pool in cold weather and develop sea legs. No water ballast though, has a box keel with 2 heavy deep cycle batteries making it very stable. Even at 150lb, I can’t tip it standing on deck and pulling on handrail hard. Has trolling motor surrounded by plywood shield so won’t blades won’t hit side of pool. Has lights DVD player and 12 outlet for vacuum and fan. Kids got great use out of it and kids and I spent many nights playing cards, watching movies and sleeping in it. Made a good swimming platform in summer. Of course weren’t allowed to use motor when someone in water but they used the motor a lot in winter. Now kids are great crew on new M bought last year. Got the original idea from being disgusted with short lifespan of inflatable boats the kids used in the pool. So why not make a real boat for them. Noodles make good bumpers but a rubber permanent strip or thick rope would be best. Hope pictures load, never tried this before. If not, someone please help me. Hope you enjoy.

Indeed, the mod's can fix it - we are Jedi Knights, didn't you know? ;)

Bob, you needed to choose the "IMG Code" selection from the Photobucket pull-down... and the copy and paste that link into your postings here in the forum. We don't generally use HTML to post pics in this forum.

Bob,

Your picture didn't work. I imagine one of the moderators can edit it to work right. But if may offer some assistance on how to get photobucket pics to post:

On your photobucket page put your mouse on the thumbnail of the pic you want to post. A drop down menu of four options should appear right below the pic. Mouse down and click on the IMG option which will turn the code blue. Right click and select copy. Now paste in your post while in the edit mode and it should work out.

Can't use photobucket here at work and am going from memory but I think that is correct.

Looking forward to seeing this picture of the "Mini Mac". (even if it does have the slower blue hull... :D )

Cheers,
Jim

That is way cool. Looks like it would work at the lake also. Lucky kids.

Wow! You are extremely talented at boat building. There is no way I could ever build something like that. What lucky kids to have such a cool craft.

Of course it's still missing a mast and sails.

I sure hope this doesn't give the aircraft pilots on this site any ideas for their kids  8) Rob

Absolutely brilliant, Bob.

If the kids get bored of sailing around the "semi sheltered" waters of your swimming pool, you could send them to follow Vihlen's journey on April Fools from Africa to the US. Although, I think yours is bigger.

"Pedal Planes" - plans are available to make a "kiddie-car" pedal toy that looks like, f'rinstance, a Pitts biplane. I bought the plans at the Oshkosh show, years past, but lacked the woodworking skills to make a "pedal Pitts" for my cousin's daughter. Oh, well.

This "Mini Mac" is way cooler because it actually FLOATS! 8)

If you have a pool, don't be afraid of trying to make one. I didn't use any tool more complicated than a jig saw and since never in waves, bottom is flat about 3/4" . Sides are about 1/4" and deck about 3/8". We get our plywood in mm here. Made the cockpit higher than waterline with drain holes. Also an anchor locker that drains. One extra thing that is fun for them is a crane with a small metal basket that they drop to the bottom of the pool they then dive down and load up with toys they dropped there. Builds lots of skills but they think they are playing. Since then, they have been snorkeling all over the world (Phillipines, Red Sea and Fl Keys) with ease and no fear. I'm sure all the time spent playing in pool and on their boat has built up skill and confidence in water and for boating. Son, now 10, is an excellent helmsman on the :macm: . Floor space is full 8' with space under cockpit like :macm: . Cockpit a little less than 2' , main cabin a little more than 6'. Hand rails and cleats cut from teak boards.Windows 1/4" polycarbonate with a leftover piece cut into an anchor shape and has lead weights from a broken pool cleaner attached to it. Keel holds about 200lbs of batteries and lead sheet left over from lining an xray room. Glue was one part urethane (Gorrila Grip kind).Didn't use fiberglass in house but covered the bottom to waterline with polyester cloth with epoxy. No itching when sanding. Took one month of nights and weekends to finish in Dec for Christmas present although kids were involved in sanding and painting. Cut large pieces in workshop but assembled it inside the house in the playroom (had double doors leading to outside) but wife didn't like the smells, but too cold to work outside in Dec. I once rebuilt a Triumph 650 in my living room but was when I was single, now resigned to the playroom and even that is in jeapardy. Put a small porta pottie in cockpit so kids don't have to climb off when sleeping on it. I think more people should have boats for their kids in their pools. First pool boat I ever made was small red row boat that the kids enjoyed a lot but wanted one with a cabin so they could sleep on it over night. Kids transition from their pools boats to larger ones easily and feel right at home and confident on big ones. Also allows use of pool year round. Bob

Rick, my brothers and I had a pedal plane when we were kids (my dad was a Boeing supervisor) and we used to go down the biggest hills we could find in the neighorhood to see if it would 'fly' :o and since there is a 'trolling motor' on the mini-mac I was thinking more along the lines of no mini planes with motor and spinning prop. 8) Rob
