Deck wash pump

Thinking of purchasing and installing the following deckwash pump.

Reason being... having to stand over the engine well to reach down and pick up a bucket of salt water is becoming a chore. We use salt water to wash down the cock pit after crabbing & fishing.

Having the pump with hose (7.5m) should allow us to wash down the whole deck as well after lifting crab dillies & pots.

Then there is... where to install it. Somewhere near the stern to easily drop down the intake hose.

I do believe these pumps have an automatic cut off system. IE when I let go of the spray trigger, the pump turns off.

Is this how it works, does anyone know ?

Trip- There have been chats on what you want to do. Try a search using keyword "washdown". Cruise the mod pages for a transom mounted pump - keyword "shower".

I haul up buckets of sea / lake water over the side with a line attached to the bucket handle.

I have a submersible pump made by Rule ITT, that's fairly close to this one; the kit I got here in the USA included a light-gauge plastic hose and a spray nozzle. (Mine is Rule model il500PK.)

You clip it directly to the battery, then let it drop over the side. You would need to get a hose and a nozzle for the Whitworth's pump, but its low-pressure output wouldn't require a very sturdy hose at all. It's portable, it stows in a small space, you don't have to run electrical wiring and install it permanently, and you can also use it as a bilge pump or for pumping anything other than gasoline (petrol).

there is a pressure switch internal to the assembly that will cut off flow at adjustable pressure.

Did you note that this model needs a 20amp fuse and associated heavy gauge wiring?

If this is a poll question, I vote for the plastic bucket on a rope. It works for me for salt water. My old pump only lasted one season for salt water spray down. I use a clip-on portable pump for my engine flush from my 5 gallon freshwater tank I keep in the truck. It gives me 3 minutes of flush.

Yep thats what I thought Rick I paid about $180. for my set up complete with hose & hardware but then again I'm a cheap Bast.
or as I like to say I'm just a wee bit on the frugal side but I do love to bartar or haggle

Bought and installed the Johnston ($349 less 10%) + 5m of 6mm twin wiring & some hose.

Mounted at stern on port side away from boarding ladder. Sits under captains seat. Hose has to hang on mast arch to avoid contact with steering mechanism.

Inlet installed above water linel, [wasn't comfortable working below water line] also helps to suck in clean salt water from under the hull & up tide away from engine well & sink outlet.

Switch installed near battery under cabin ladder. (switch nr 1) 20am fuse accessed at switch.


Tested out weekend just gone. Used for hosing down the foredeck up to the anchor well, kept the cockpit clean after bleeding fish. Pressure blasted the motor well drain, salt water blasted the dishes , hosed down our reef boots & aerated the yabbies.

Maybe I could install my pump inside the same. The filter would be on the fore side for easy access to clean. I found this deck plate. It opens to 8" diam.

Highlander, how did you screw or bolt in the pump. I am wanting the screws to be concealed inside.

PS Just noticed that my external installation is part way on a bend in the fibreglass. May not accommodate the flat deck plate. pm 19.1.10

I got no pics. But I installed the pump inside on the transom. I put two hose fittings in the engine well. One has a 3' hose with the strainer that I dunk in the water when I need it. The other is to a standard garden coil hose. Works great.

There are many different brands of these water blasters that work like a hypodermic needle. Simply stick one end in the water over the side of the boat, then squirt the water exactly where you want.

Now that could have multiple uses.

See the pics I posted above it is mounted on a 4" x 6" plastic cutting board to strengthen the transom were I mounted it

I bought the deck plates new 8" or 10" cannot remember I would have to measure them for $7. at my local marine flea market
