hull all, new to sailing and the forum, I just bought this boat, the bill of sale says nothing about the H.I.N # so I have been looking in all the locations that I have read about and still cant find the drilled in numbers on the floor stringers- I would really apreciate some help- Canopus really deserves a second chance to live. The keel was swelled, so while removing it, it fell apart... with a hammer. I will be completely recovering it- The sails say V22 #1001 the original owner has said he bought it in SF bay in 1968, and it is still all original- even the cushions. The mast was snapped last year, but the hull is in very solid condition, anyone have a mast they want to sell? You can see pics of it at www.newinertia.wordpress.com I am tempted to turn it into a motorboat if i cant find the mast...
Kansas City, MO
I cant seem to put an image in- how do you do it?
V-22 hull # 1001, 1968? cant find a vin breakdown.

I'm unfamiliar with the term "floor stringers," and I don't know about multiple locations for the HIN#; but my number is drilled in a bulkhead wall below the forward section of the cockpit. It's on the starboard/dinette side, behind the electical panel, and the bulkhead runs parallel to the length of the boat.newinertia wrote:... so I have been looking in all the locations that I have read about and still cant find the drilled in numbers on the floor stringers...
If you don't have one, it may be that the boat was built right on the edge of more strict government requirements for hull numbers. I have a 1961 Albacore 15 that doesn't have a hull number marked anywhere, and while researching where the numbers were located on those boats, I found out that hull numbers were not strictly required prior to sometime in 1968. If that's true, that may explain why you can't find a hull number.
Have you called MacGregor Yacht Corp yet? The people down there are usually as helpful as can be, and might be able to tell you what you need to know about a 1968 V-22.
Your sail number may mean nothing. My boat is a 1972 V2-22, and I still have the original mainsail. The sail numbers are 790.
New mast is available from BWYachts.com for $595.00 plus shipping. Has updated feed slot, according to description.

Hi there Newinertia,
that is one nice looking Macgregor 21 sailboat.
21 not a 22.
I would not bother with vin numbers, they are
located on the starboard transom side but only
needed for state registration etc.
go ahead and maintain that beautiful sailboat.
fix er up.
its well worth it.
would be glad to assist.

Some of the very early V22's (not 2-22's, however) bore a strong resemblance to the V21. Newinertia's boat is not the first one that I have seen like this.
...he probably wants the VIN (HIN) number so he can register it...markaram wrote:I would not bother with vin numbers, they are

Newinertia's boat is a 21 and looks
exactly as my Macgregor 21.
the 22 is a foot longer and 6 inches wider,
and over 600lbs heavier
with a beefier look to it plus a pop top roof
over the cabin.
the 21's never had a pop top roof at all.
here in Ontario we don't really register
our boats but only the trailer for the boat.
Our vin no's would be for insurance purposes.
I guess there is more gov't control down there
in the illuminati US.

Well- I really appreciate all you helping me find out exactly what it is. The agent that sold it to me wrote on all the paperwork that it was a 22 but thanks for the correction!
