Replaced Original Steering Cable with Rotary

Post by R Rae »

Just completed the installation of my Teleflex Rotary Steering System. Easy and straightforward imho.

The only modification to make was removing a 3 1/4" Dia doughnut from around the original steering wheel hole in the pedestal...Jigsaw took care of that, then drilled three- 3/8" Dia. bolt holes.

Whole job took maybe 1-1/2 hours total.

Smooth as silk, but haven't tried it in the water yet.

If you dont have one already, now you can install the perfect autopilot for your rotary system: the Simrad AP14R or AP12R (they are both the same AP, only difference is in the display/control unit). It will fit right inside the pedestal, out of sight. Simrad just recently (March/April '10) stopped making these, but there are a few of them still available.

Unfortunately they are out of stock almost everywhere. If you do find it listed somewhere I would suggest cross-checking with the seller to make sure they really do have it. Pity its no longer made, as I think its the best autopilot for the Mac by a wide margin.

I do have a quick question. I am needing to replace a 12ft Detmar steering cable but I can find no replacements. I have been to the Teleflex website and looked but this is my issue. The cable that is on my boat has a 5/8" steering rod. All of the Teleflex cables I have looked at have a 3/4" steering rod. Any advise. This is my first boat that I have had to work on and anything will help.

Old thread alert.

We need to know the model and year of your boat.
