If anybody here so much as *MENTIONS* anything about the costs of rescue, I will personally climb through this wire and disconnect their couilles with a rusty pen knife.

Just sayin'.

I hope she doesn't need rescuing during her voyage - - - because the costs of rescue are so large and seem to be unrecoverable :!:   :D :D :D

Good luck to her and to her parents. I hope she does have a good team to support her on her way. Oh and yes the costs to society of a rescue mission .... as long as she doesn't come too close to my old fatherland :

(I know it's an old vid, but still soooo funny :D !)

So you are for the Lad! At 14 you have a dream and really don't know what life is about.
You will learn very quickly the first storm you are in. Fatuige sets in after 24 hrs on a young one. It than turns to self leliance on face the fact you either do it or Die.
These are actual feelings you go thru and the bad part is most likely there is no turning back and no one to save you.
I been thru this on my 35 ft Alberg for a 3 year around trip back in 1982. I redesigned the boat to take aything the seas could toss and it did with over 40 ft. seas 3 days.
The boat took it very well with no problem.
My girlfriend couldn't take deck watch leaving me on deck with water Tight hatches in a lockdown with twin teathers supporting me in cockpit as the waves washed deck and cockpit.
I often was floating in cockpit.
I spent 12 years building Knowledge and Celtial navigation doing my trip and out fitting the boat.
Fact is no Person under the age of 21 really knows what the conditions are.
Reason is they never experance or they may have for breaf time but they don't have the long term experance of long distance sailors.

Good post Dave!! I say the parent should take the trip first and then make the decision whether or not to send their child. Right now the only one I've seen on here that has begun to have the personal experience of what it takes to take a trip of this magnitude has been Dave. Has anyone else that would be happy to see their child embark on a trip like this come close to experiencing it or anything similar themselves?

A lot of parents would be better off living their own dreams and not living them through their children,

When I was a kid, I had to sail upwind to and from school in a freezing gale everyday.

At 14 I was sailing in a protected bay on weekends and for school sport....mind you GPS,internet etc all the technology to make a long journey easier hadn't been invented and now as a father the thought my 14 yr old going around the world makes my head spin. Then again its been done and what does it prove????
I wonder sometimes.....watching some parents at kids sport games......push push....reliving thier own youth???
Then again the thought of an adventure of that magnitude would certainly make you feel alive!
