What size outboard?

I'm quite sure I'm going to buy a 2000X next week. It comes with a smaller 2 stroke. Nothing against 2 strokes, I'm just a four stroke person. Since I'm going to sell the "2", how big of "4" should I get? I'm going to do an equal amount of sailing vs. motoring. I'm going to use the boat on the big reservoirs in South Dakota and want to be able to skoot to safety in a hurry when the big winds kick up in a hurry. For those of you unfamiliar with the Dakotas, the wind can go from zero to 40 knots in a hurry.

I'm thinking of a 70hp 4 stroke, but would like to hear your opinions. I don't plan to ski behind the boat, but I might pull a wakeboard occasionally when we have friends aboard.

Congratulations, Brian. I watched a REALLY nice 2000 (IIRC) X go for under $11K on eBay with a 9.9HP motor. I figured it would cost as much as all the other 50HP Xs being advertised by the time I swapped motors. In retrospect, I probably should've grabbed it and put a bigger motor (than 50HP) on it, and sold the 9.9 to a fisherman locally.

My advice is that since you are buying the boat to learn sailing, do just that, and keep the small two-stroke until you're sure you're going to like the sailing thing. From what I read here, even a 9.9HP will push an X to just beyond its 6.4 knot hull speed.

While you're doing that, perhaps Evinrude will bring out the 70HP version of the 230 lb 2-cylinder E-TEC they've not acknowledged is in the works. The lightest 50HP 4-stroke you can get is the 205 (or is it 212) lb Honda, but it's carbureted and finicky about needing the carbs drained every year, and not as smooth as EFI. When you get to 70 HP, you're looking at a whopping 365 lbs, and most 75s and above are 375 lbs or more (except the 320 lb E-TEC). I know some here use heavier motors, but if you're going to keep the fast Lund, you'll have a toy for that.

Thanks Moe. Long story short.. I've got other toys that go fast, I'm wondering what size OB I need to go 20 knots with 800 lbs of humans onboard.

We you say 20 KNOTS (23 mph) with 800 lbs of people, I'd say at least 90HP (from what I read here).... but you sure better have the transom reinforced. Right now, the 90 HP two-stroke E-TEC would be my choice for that. I don't care for a lot of weight on the transom of a boat.

Four cycles: Consider Suzuki or Johnson for the 70hp @ 335# or the 110/140 hp ~ 410#, quietest outboards on the planet.

Two cycles: [/i] Consider Nissan TLDI 90 or Evinrude 75/90 eTecs, lighter in weight but with tweakier technoid, less time in market and more cruising noise.

Your's is a Ford vs. Chevy question, without a "correct" answer. It's pretty clear that EFI is the induction of choice. Now you need to choose 2 or 4 cycles. My money's on the 4-stroke. It's greater weight is offset by probable quieter running and longer time in the market (nearly bulletproof reliability since '96).

In either case, transom reinforcement isn't a terribly complex deal, just read about it in earlier threads. Search on "engine size" "Suzuki" "transom" for dozens of earlier debates that touched on your same topic. 8)

at cruising speed....3000 rpm.....to maybe 4500 rpm..... those noise levels between the etec 75 and the suzi 70 are really hard to differentiate.... and the 90 etec (same weight) is just slightly noisier than the 75. the real advantage is the lower emissions of the new etec.... lower than even the 4 stroke....

now for the bad news..... at the boat show last week......it was about 8K to put one of those E-tec 90's on your boat. just a little more than I can drop this month...

and the fuel consumption at mid range seems to tilt a little in favor of the Etec over the Suzi....., full throttle the Suzi looks lik e it might be a little lower.... but again... would love to have side by side comparisons with fuel flow meters running...

FWIW, I have a honda 50 and love it. It is quite. I once ran out of gas while I was ideling in a harbor (for saftey of quick engine get away if and when my sailing skills let me down) and I ran out of gas and didn't even notice until I went to power my out of a sticky spot. It was then followed by a frantic fuel tank change/prime/engine start.

If you can afford it, I would opt for the largest motor you could get. Captain Kirk never called down to Scotty and said, "you gota give me less power....."
