Stack Pack ? Lazy Bag?

Post by phil kelly »

Not sure what we call these but I've seen these on a few boats, it's the permanent mainsail cover attached to the boom that zips up over the sail instead of the usual boom cover. Has anyone fitted one on an X ? where did you get it from, does it work ok and how much do they cost?

Yes, I have, and I love it. Several different sailmakers make them, and they really are a help.

I had Doyle Chesapeake Sails, in Annapolis MD (close to my home), make me a "Cradle Cover" last winter, for Bossa Nova. It has a foot-rope that slips into the groove in the top of Bossa Nova's boom, and it has built-in lazyjacks. Makes it super-simple for hoisting & lowering the main, and when it's down you just zip it up. It also has slots in the cover for leading through your "Jiffy Reefing" lines, if you have those set up (and on a tender boat like the 26X, I think you should!)

This is the same thing that Kelly-Hanson sells, and I would believe they have all the right measurements and can have it made up to fit properly "right out of the box." But since I took my sail to Doyle to ask about it, and they added the foot conversion into the purchase price, I decided I'd rather have it made up locally (instead of having it made in Barbados and shipped from Colorado).

I will get one made for my next boat, before I take it out sailing. No kidding. I think it's that good.

Hi Phil.

If you do a search or look back through some post's from not long ago i put up some pics, dimensions and instructions on how to make one for a lot less that buying one.

A couple of the guys on here used the instructions and made one for themselves as well as the one i made and they work great.

Hi Madguy, Thanks for the info, I've printed it all off and it could easily be my next project in the spring. By the way does the bag material slide easily into the boom groove with the sail foot or do I need to try a few samples of material first.
Thanks , Phil.

My Doyle stack-pack has a "luff-rope" sewn to the bottom of the pack, and they took the luff-rope off my sail so I use it loose-footed. If Madguy's instructions tell you to slip the bottom of the pack in with the sail's foot-rope, I would try that with a sample of the material I was going to use.

Sailrite's version, available in kit form, is evidently made to zip to the foot of the sail on either side. It would take long zippers, attached so that the bottom of the sail-cover would overlap the boom and thus give the sail UV protection.

I wouldn't want to be without it and the lazyjacks now. Soon I'll have some updated pictures of the lazyjacks as I modified them some from the pictures there.

Sorry for taking so long to reply.

Yes the material slides in very easy, all you do is put the bottom edge of the sail into the sail pack and slide the lot straight in, i made mine with medium weight canvass and had no problems, its much easier when hoisting and lowering the sail, specialy when coming into dock, just drop the sail, push it into the pack and zip it up.

Hope this is of help and if you do make one make sure you post some pics.

Next job on my agenda is to make one of these for my new X and get new foam and recover for the interior.

Looking forward to a new year sailing,

My wife and I are looking at getting a stack pack. How hard is it to set up and take down for trailering?

With our S we just leave the sail in the sail-pack on the boom and disconnect the lazy-jack and reef lines and take the boom/pack/sail off together. Just a couple minutes on an S.

On the way down to Florida we didn't want to get road grime on the furler or main/pack, so wrapped them in pieces of....

... cheap tarp and used the bungees with the balls on them to keep everything together and it worked great on a 2200 mile tow.

You can see the boom/main/pack tied to the side stanchions above. We could put it in the cabin, but wanted to keep that free so that we could eat and sleep in the boat before it went in the water.

We took out in the rain and then drove to Penn. leaving the boat in Florida, but the Main and sail-pack were wet and we didn't want to take a chance of mildew, so stuck the boom/main/pack in the suburban. It fit from the back window to just between the side of the front seats. When we got to Penn we dried all of that out and it is now stored in the 'burb until we return there to get it.

We like how now it is all one compact unit, but you still can remove the pack/sail from the boom in just a minute if you want to. Our pack has slugs on the bottom of it and the sail only has one as it is a loose footed main.

We love ours......

Just thought i would add some pics of my new sail pack that i have just finneshed, done it in Black, as the boat has a black stripe, also had the new 150% genny with a black sun strip, now in the middle of changing the Bimini cover to black as well(you can see a theme building here cant you?)

The next job is to make new cockpit cusions also in black.

Now for a favour? can anyone measure the backrest height and lenght, and base depth and length for me please, i will be going back to my boat at the weekend and want to purchase the foam to take with me so that i can cut it to size when i get there, i dont want to buy a piece of foam that to small.

Boat is a 1995 26X

Thanks in advance.
