AGM type batteries have no problem working under water. Just one of their many advantages.

I mounted the com radio on my Venture 2-22 on the right side of the companionway exit looking from the inside. The radio for music is below the television:

The com radio is not connected to anything yet, just mounted.

Here's the location for my VHF. Located high in the compaionway, easily accessible from both the cockpit & cabin. I've since angled the mount more towards the cockpit, where I mostly am when using the radio.

Just a little info on the Standard Horizon Eclipse. There are two models and it was confusing to me. They both have DSC.

The Standard Horizon GX1000S Eclipse DSC ..

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... &id=946425

..has DSC, but is only one radio in the enclosure and scans back and forth to channel 70 for DSC calls while also handling your other needs.

The GX1100S Eclipse DSC+ (note the "+")...

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... id=1133569

....is actually two radios in the enclosure and is a Class D DSC with a dedicated channel 70 receiver that continuously watches for DSC calls. This is the one we got and is about $35 more than the other one.

In retrospect I wonder if you really need a radio that continuously monitors channel 70 for DSC calls where someone else is in trouble? I'd like to help someone else, but you aren't suppose to do that unless there is no Coast Guard or they ask you to help. Also if they have sent a distress call that call will repeat itself, so the radio should then switch to it and you should be able to hear the whole call and get their position. We got the radio to mainly broadcast a signal if we were in trouble and I think the cheaper one would do that just fine.

We do like this radio a lot and it has tons of features and is easy to use for the normal stuff. It does way more than the old one that is still on the boat and I feel for around $100 or less it is a safety item that shouldn't be ignored.

c ya,

I have my handheld radio with DSC in a charging cradle that is mounted to the top of the helm pedestal, and wired into the auxiliary DC power. The antenna is a 3 dB gain and is rail mounted to the top of the mast carrier, in the stern. This works fine for me, as I can view the radio easily from the helm.

I also have two units. 1mounted inside the companionway starboard side 1 portable.
Usage? Weather. Morning harbor chatter. Just in case I need assistance. In that order. I caution those who might attempt a bad weather rescue of another vessel while aboard a 26 Mac. I have only worked one vessel rescue.. Not from a Mac . From a 13' Inflatable with an 18HP OB. Got close enough to board the other boat and tie off a long line and that Inflatable worked to keep him.... off the rocks while I worked to get their diesel running..
I have accomplished Numerous Scuba Rescues.. Rescues can be dangerous..for the one assisting/performing the rescue..Often the rescuee is in full Panic Mode and Panic kills.. Practice Practice Practice...

Thanks!

So I turned my VHF radio on, went to channel 1 for the weather report (do they still broadcast there?) and got...nothing...fuzz...white noise... :(

Maybe I'm just too far inland?

You need to push the WX button for weather channel 1, not VHF channel 1 perhaps??

It might also be on WX 2 or other channel in your area...

Okay - hit the WX button and got the weather!! Nice...didn't that used to be on regular channel 1 (like early 1980's, I'm thinking)??
