squeak while motor is disconnected

Post by tom clayton »

I was wondering, when i disconnect my motor from steering, the push rod drags across the fiberglass while at sail and steering and makes a unpleasant sound. when the rod is connected to the motor no sound because the rod no longer is resting on the fiberglass. Has anyone addressed this issue with some kind of teflon sleeve? I was also thinking that hole that the push rod comes thru into the transome should have some sort of weather boot to keep water from entering the cabin area like the boot for the motor control cables. I have some ideas but wanted to find out if anyone has allready tackled the problem, thanks Tom. I would also like to thank those who gave me advice on where to look for the leak i had coming down the starboard side it was indeed a leak from one of my cleat installations and has since been repaired

I have the same sqeak, but all of the time. I see where the rod is rubbing against the fiberglass, and just decided to ignore it. It has been six, going on seven seasons. By the way, I do have a boot over the opening.

A bit of slippery stuff usually stops it and stops it enlarging the hole as quick too, I have used lanolin grease and just wax at times put it on the hole edges and not the rod especially if you have long legs as then toes can get greasy when stretching out on the back bunk.

I have mini-mod solution for the rod boot mod. A seal that is easily obtained regionally and costs pennies to make. Here is the link, just scroll down to my post. Complete with pics.

Here is the answer to your squeak. http://www.mclubemarine.com/sailkote/

Just turn the wheel hard to port and spray the linkage. I reapply in mid-season.

This stuff is also great for reducing sail hoisting/lowering friction. Spray it into the slot in the mast, lasts all season. :)

I also spray the linkage 2 times a year and the annoying squeak disappears! Guaranteed

Parafin wax on the rod works well. You may have to put it on a couple of times the first year but over time the glass gets saturated with the wax and it goes longer between waxing.
