DaveB what are you running for an A/C unit? I have a Cruise Air.. I am thinking of selling it and building a small window unit to fit the companionway..
No where to store that Huge cumbersome C/A on the boat .. It was always for in the slip.. Toss some stats out about size and placement and consumption battery life .....please.. : ) Also what have you got for an Inverter?

Re: Shore power wiring Question
I have a 5100 btu and thats plenty, I bought a 1/8 inch thick white plexiglass and cut it to replace the companion way and cut it to fit around the AC unit.
I use a generator 1200 watts to power the AC unit, I have several cig. type inverters rangeing from 75-150 watts to power all my other AC units, even a 63 quart Refig.,freezer as my dc plug died. I use a 100 inverter for the frig. but will run on 75 watt inverter.
I have mentioned several times on power consumption and you can do a search under my screen name to see them here.
Here is some photo's.

Re: Shore power wiring Question
We have in "Lovers Cross", a shore power array made by last owner 4 years ago.
He is an Electronic Engineer working for Police Cars electronics
He installed an Inverter/Charger that he bought over the internet from Hong Kong. It is a 2000 W inverter and 5 amp charger. He said he paid $600 dlls. for it. It is not a Marine Unit.
It is running with shore power a GFIC outlet to connect 115 V things, a small fridge, a small microwave. When is connected to shore power it will be overriding the inverter and provide the AC power directly, plus will activate the charger to recharge my two battery bank.
If it is disconected from shore power, it will run everything AC too, but the power drain will be too much and our fridge will be running for like 3 hrs. before 50% of deplation.
You have the option with a remote controll installed at the galley to turn off the inverte when you are out the shore power.
Our Cruiseair conditioner is connected with an extension cord, directly to shore power, not thru the boat connections.
The problem is when we have been with no shore power, and no one to see whats happening, the inverter have continued providing AC power to the fridge and the battery bank have been depletad completely. And when we reconect the shore power the interrnal charger (5A), doesnt have enough power to recharge the bank. So we have used an external 10A charger, but I know is not good for the batteries in the future.
Our motor is just a Tohatsu 9.8 hp, with not too much power recharger capacity.
But if we go out of power sailing, I can always start the motor manually with the cord, wich is good.
But using just DC power for my stereo, VHF and lights, my bank (2 Interstate 27 110 ah Batteries connected together) will last the whole day with no problem.

Re: Shore power wiring Question
Hector,
We have the 63quart Edgestar and can go out for 4 days and run everything on board with 2-27group Deepsycle House batteries. The Voltage never gets below 12.2 volts and often come back with 12.4 volts.
My 50hp Honda max. output is 10 amps and we sometimes motorsail at 2200 rpms and at that low rpm's I doubt it puts in more than 5 amps to batteries.
I have a 400 watt inverter but don't use it as the higher the inverter the more juce required to run it with builtin fans.
Why I use the 75-150 watt cig. type inverters and usually only use the 75-100 watt.
My frig. runs great on the 75 watt inverter but use a 100 watt for that most of the time until I get a new 12volt cord for the frig. Many people run refig. like mine at 38 degree and turn off while sleeping and turn back on in morning with temps. at 44 degrees. I don't as I don't need to conserve batteries but on a longer trip past 4 days I would.
I also live were 90 degrees and more 5 mo. a year happens.
