Hi from New member.

Post by tubeydude »

Hi all,
I just my first sailboat (1984 M25) and have learned a TON by reading this forum. I got the boat as a major project boat. It was flooded inside. There was also a 1988? Honda 7.5 motor on the floor stored in the WRONG position. So there was a water and oil scum line around the interior. At least I knew it was water tight on the bottom. :) Motor is probably not worth salvaging.

8 hrs of pressure washing, a pond pump, a lot of elbow grease and the hull is clean. I still need to:

rewire
install bilge pump (there is none right now)
replace standing/running rigging
get a motor ( I just saw a 2004 Honda 5 for $350, but it was a short shaft and did not have the 12 v out) bummer
redo headliner/cushions
redo interior outdoor wood. (I have a friend who is a cabinet maker and can help me out)

The Swing down keel moves freely. However, it is pretty rusty. It looks like it would be about 5-600 bucks to take it out, get it blasted and painted. I think I'll wait on that one though. I want to make sure everything else is ok. I'll trailer it, so the keel will be dry most of the time.

I wanted a project and I sure got one. I'll be a day sailer/fair weather for a while.

I want to run the halyards aft. I'll probably stick with the hank on jib for now, but I'd like to have a roller furler in the future.

So I have a couple of questions:
What should I consider the minimum horsepower outboard for this boat?
Is it ok to drill holes in dinnette and head area where there is a groove for water to collect? At leas this way it could drain into the bilge.
What is the most common/best bilge pump and thru hull location?

Any other words of wisdom?

I appreciate it!

edit: I'm in the Santa Barbara, CA area

Eric -- good luck on your project. Sounds like you're well on the way with the fun.

Sounds like you picked up a "good deal" ! A good reliable engine...5-8 hp would work well. We had an 8 hp on our prev. 26 Mac-S, and it was plenty of H.P. with a full ballast, and 2 and 4 passengers.

NOTE: Dont take seriously that you owe everyone Pizza as a new owner...that's not true. Just send everyone fuel money :P

Happy Sailing !

Hello Erik,

and welcome to the forum. Can I please tell you that I feel for you. My Mac26S was flooded after I bought her - on land ! Well, that's the British weather (and my stupidity, covering her with a tarp) .
I have just recently after all the scrubbing and cleaning installed a new stronger bilge pump (2000 GPH). The old tiny weenie (500 GPH) one will go into the lazerette as thats where water can start to collect when my boat is on the trailer. This will be wired so that it is independent from the battery mains switch (so will work even if I switch off the main isolator). From reviews that I've read "Rule" seems to be a reputable company, I like the "rule mate" series, all compact, very little extra work when installing and they seem easy to service. Shop around but don't buy a cheap Chinese copy ... your life and your boat may well depend on it. I bought mine online on fleebay and had it shipped from the US to Scotland. It was still much cheaper than the cheapest offer I could find here ! Always have a non electric, hand operated pump as backup. I found a good review article on sizing and installation of bilge pumps online :

http://www.yachtsurvey.com/bilge_pumps.htm

Working on a boat is a great way of getting to know your new craft and learning things bit by bit ! Take a long break when things don't seem to work out and don't forget ... it is a hobby, not a must. If your boat isn't ready for the water this month, she may be the next month :)

Best wishes,

Immo

Thanks all for the responses. (even the pizza and fuel ones  )
So the 7.5 honda 4 stroke that came with it is a write off. It was submerged, the fly/balance wheel was rusted solid to the top and cracked. The valve cover was cracked, water has intruded into the head and cylinders. The throttle cable was frozen. Carb was heavily oxidized... etc.

So I'm looking for a replacement. I like the idea of a DC output so the battery gets charged when in use, but a solar charger may be a more steady state solution.

Anybody know of a good motor around Santa Barbara, CA? I'm keeping a lookout on ebay, craigslist etc.

I think I am going to do the DIY PVC roller furler as well. Can't beat the price and I am ALL about bang-for-the-buck.

I got a 800 GPH auto bilge pump and am going to run the hose out to the transom about a foot above the cockpit drain hole. I kinda hate to put another hole in her, but I worry about the cockpit drain filling the bilge should a one way valve on a y adapter fail.

When is the proper time to name her?

Thank,

Erik

Renaming ... oooh you are going to risk the wrath of all the spirits of the sea ! All vessels are registered in the ledger of the deep and you first have to purge her old name before even considering it. Purging and renaming has to involve a lot of Champagne, both for yourself and also for Poseidon (you don't want the Kraken to come after you). It would be sad to already see you have to vanish from the forum. I swear, this is all true. Just google "Ledger of the deep". :D :D :D

Hi Newbie: Welcome to the legion of the damned  I have a Honda 7.5 on my V-25, it is more than adequate. It's not so much the HP as the torque at the prop. Believe it or not this will be more important at low speeds and close quarters like marina and ramps. What is the orignal name of your new beauty. What are you tihing of naming her? I think, Poseidon, as previously mentioned with enough libation would look favorably on a new name since the boat was for all intents salvaged. Our first boat, V-21 was Penny Sue after my beloved wife and eternal first mate. Second boat V-222 was Penny Sue Too. 1976 V-25 named Freedom launched Jan 1, 1977. Dennis Connor later named Americas Cup boat Freedom. I tried to sue but to no avail :D Naming a boat is no light undertaking. quote from Indiana Jones movie "Choose Wisely" I have seen from the sublime to the ridiculous. One of our yacht club members named his craft "BLOW JOB" we wouldn't publish it in the roster. Something to be said for discretion. Get a copy of Sail Power by Wallce Ross if you are considering running halyards aft. Great resource.
A bit of history. My dad was aboard and aircraft carrier the original Midway CVE65 during WWII. The navy launched the newer Midway, now a museum ins San Diego, and changed the name of my dad's ship to the U.S.S. St. Lo on October 14, 1944. The old salts aboard said this was a bad omen. On October 25, 1944 at the battle of Leyte Gulf in the Phillipines the U.S.S. St Lo became the first U.S. Navy ship to be sunk by a Japanese Kamikaze. Dubious distinction. Fair Winds and Full Sails, Old Salt....

Since you're in California, start sleeping aboard the boat - a major quake is due anytime 0-20 years from now. :|

So the current name is "Integrity"

It is displayed on both port and starboard sides of the cockpit just above the water line in big, black, not so pretty vinyl block letters. The vinyl is blistering on about half of the letters. Not so good.

I am thinking of...
Pi-Seas

You see, I was born on Pi (3/14) which makes me a Pisces. Pisces is a water sign as well, and I've always love the water.

I think that Poseidon would approve.

What a load of tosh..

all you have to do to rename is this..

drink two bottles of JD, peel the old name off, as you stick each new letter of the name on you MUST drink a glass of Rum and spill champagne over the bow of the boat, (choose a short name or it gets expensive) before you move to the next side, you have to do a millenia old ritual dance wearing nothing but a string vest and a pair of shorts with one leg longer than the other (very important bit that) and before you move to that back of the boat (i can never remember the name of this bit) you MUST slap a virgin with a red kipper on both sides of her face beforestripping off, diving into the water on a night thats a full moon while holding a new 30 kile Bruce Anchour. then finnish the name on the back of the boat and hey presto.....its done........

Lot easier than all that other stuff...
