... that you will lose one mph of speed under power for every 100 lbs you add to the Mac 26 X. This is from "Practical Sailor", and their interview with Roger Mac Gregor shortly after the original launch of the 26 X. Just Google Practical Sailor, MacGregor, for more. Seems like Roger ought to know, and if your worried about losing 3mph with your 60hp motor in order to gain 300lbs worth of "cabinets", an electric head, and a real galley, well, that is your decision .
Personally, I thought of buying an X in HK and sailing it to Taiwan making a 340nm sea passage that everyone has told me to avoid. However, I figure if you add fuel strapped at or below the waterline, etc. etc., as some folks have explained above, the extra ballast would give her considerable stability at the cost of the speed noted above. As I remember, MacGregor did not mention the effect of extra weight under sail, but, undoubtedly, it would depend where the weight was placed, and, my concern would be "balancing" it, especially port v. starboard.
Just my two cents.

Re: wood mods - cautions
I think that the weight/speed comment from Roger, was about "top speed". I seriously doubt that the effect would be much at "hull speed". A little extra power to get going and a little more stopping distance. But the increased draft from the extra weight will add negligible hull resistance. IMHO
