So my wife (#7) casually mentioned while at dinner tonight, maybe we should consider moving to Antigua?

Neither of us have ever been there (we've been to Puerto Rico) so I had to go to Google and find out all about it. Wonderful climate (except for hurricane season), speak English - (85% literate), 87,000 population - 30,000 in the Capitol city of St. Johns, they have casinos and poker, one can lease a real nice Villa for about $1,500/month. They have restaurants and fast food and movie theaters and shopping (maybe she has decided she has already purchased all the clothes available in Las Vegas?) They have wonderful sailing around the northeast corner of the island (I don't own a boat but I can probably buy one there) (maybe a motoryacht to party on and an M for everyday use)?? Currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, currently $100.00 USD = $270.00 ECD. They have Sat TV and Internet.

Anybody real familiar with this island??????

Could you (hypothetically) sail a Mac down that far island hopping from Florida? Would it be too rough in a Mac or would you be protected enough to enjoy it? Just curious, i know its not exactly on topic.

The Mac is a great boat, you can see the factory sail it in some pretty rough weather but you couldn't pay me enough money to take one that far off shore - The Bahama's is one thing but all the way to Antigua is like month long journey from Florida.

I'm glad you asked because I was thinking the same question - - - and I'm thinking an M would be a fine boat to have there while living there - - - but I think I would ship it there - - - waaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy tooooooooo long and far a trip for me. I'll fly 1st class on American and wait for the boat's arrival.

I know the northeast corner of the island has the best sailing - - - but that is probably hurricane alley in season also. I suspect I would ship it there on it's trailer, slip it in the northeast corner, and then store it on the trailer in the southwest corner in hurricane season - - - but what do I know??

I'm not sure if he actually landed in Antigua, but explorer Mike Dunn, (a member of this board), sailed his modified Mac 26X, "Zeno's Arrow", across the Caribean from Florida to Venezuela. Here's a short clip from the ezine Latitude 38, July 2006 edition, "Changes in Latitude".

"I started sailing my 26X in Baja in '96," he wrote. "In '97, I trailered her to Puget Sound, then visited the San Juan Islands, did the Inside Passage to Prince Rupert, and cruised the coast of Alaska to the Arctic Ocean and Inuvikt in the Northwest Territories. I then did the Arctic Red River, Norman Wells, Ft. Hope, Ft. Simpson, Great Slave Lake, Peace River, Athabaska River, and the Milk and Poplar Rivers. Back in the States, I took my boat down the Missouri River, the Mississippi River to New Orleans, then to Florida via the IntraCoastal Waterway. I then sailed to the Bahamas, the Turks & Caicos, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgins, and all down the Leewards and Windwards to Venezuela. I also did Trinidad and the Orinoco and Amazon Rivers. In July of last year, I returned to Florida, bought a trailer, and drove my 26X back to Lake Tahoe."

What if Catigales right? You purchase an entire wardrobe of shorts and tropical shirts, get on a plane bound for Antigua, and freeze your butt off after you land in Canada!
