Brakes & Bearings - how to dismantle on 08 alloy Mac trailer

Post by trip01 »

I want to take out my bearings [to inspect & regrease] & dismantle my brakes for a cleanup. All on 2008 alloy Mac trailer.

So far I have the tire off.

its the same as virtually any other brake job. I will have to assume the brakes are the same as they were in 2004

to get the bearing buddies off, I just use a block of wood, placed on the side of the buddy, and tap the block with a small mallet or hammer

When I did a brake job on my trailer, I took lots of pics. You can see them all here 26M trailer brake pictures

You can search the forum, I did a writeup on them. But I used hard links to geocities, and the pics are orphaned in the forum, but are visible in the above link. Do a search on the forum.

I suggest also going to your manufacturer's website to check out their suggestions. From your picture, you have UFP parts.

UFP 1

UFP 2

etc, as there are other pages at UFP to read.

unless you"ve blown a seal and are leaking excessive grease i wouldnt waste the time and effort, with proper lubing there wont be any water contamination in your bearings,go to the unique functional products website and read their tech info, the brakes are as basic a disc setup as youll find , if its not clear to you how to pull pads and caliber maybe you should seek some professional help.

The calipers are held on by two bolts (often hex key type for some reason)

You remove these, then knock the caliper off the disc with a rubber hammer. Hang it with coathanger wire to prevent splitting the brake hose. You can loosen the brake bleeder screw and push the piston back into the caliper to take the new pads. When you re-attach the calipers you should use a low grade Loctite glue to make sure they stay in place. After reinstall, bleed air by opening the screws and pushing fluid through from the Master cylinder - I push the piston with a screwdriver. My Kodiak calipers have two bleeder screws - I only bleed from the upper ones.

Chip Hindes reported he had a lot of bolts/nuts come loose on his calipers, so I check my annually and before my 4 big Cape Cod trailer trips.

Mac Folk,

Thankyou for your informative replies. Brakes are done, bearings to do.

Tip...
I used a 14mm large socket with an extension to undo 2 bolts that hold on calipers. My bolts were partly seized so I sprayed with inox as I turned socket. Undo a few turns, then do up again to work loose and the inox into the thread. Take your time. 8)

Dismantled brakes...

Care to ensure 3 prong ss spung guides go inside the piston... (that's on the lower brake pad in the photo)

All done ready for 2hr long haul.
Got bearing buddy off using Paul's method.

Once pumped with grease, the buddy's blue cylinder sticks out as per photo...

Thank you for your support. 8) Knowing how it all works is very satisfying. :D
Now back to the water bladder & I bought 2 locking female cig plugs for the Waeco/s (Where to install :?: - hole saw drilling :? - cat walking around hot milk again')

P.S. PM me if you are thinking about doing your brakes & bearings. I may be able to guide you as the memory of the project is still hot in my head.

If you have Buddies it should be obvious- a metal nipple sitting dead center of the blue disk; just pump until the disk edges are proud of the metal cylinder surrounding it; as in the picture. The disk should 'float' on the grease when you push on its sides.
