MacGregors Everywhere

Post by arknoah »

I finally got to the marina today, but by the time I got there, the wind had died. So, I decided to head home. While I was walking to my car, I noticed a family that was launching their sailboat (or retrieving it -- I couldn't tell at first.) Well, I noticed the pinkish ports on the side that looked just like my Mac 25, so I was curious. I decided to ask them once I got my bag, but they were already going out. I saw that the two women, however, were walking toward the C dock so I decided to check it out.

Suffice it to say that not only was this family in C dock, they were in an adjoining slip. And, yes, they have a MacGregor, a 1988 26 model. Another interesting coincidence is that their son is 13, same as my daughter, and both he and my daughter want to be Marine Biologists.

I think we'll get along just fine.... 8)

Next to Catalina I think Mac are the biggest productions boat around. California is loaded, no pun in intended, with 'em. Fair winds and full sails....

So do we have stats on exactly how many of each model MacGregor built... 19's through 65's and the Venture 15's through 25's??

When I put my :macx: in the marina this season, i was surprised to find a blue hulled :macm: right next to mine and another at the end of our dock.

Every marina along the Chicago lakefront, from Hammond, IN. to downtown Chicago has at least one MAC X or M easily visible.

I make a business drive from Chicago to Florida every April and I have not failed to pass a Mac X or M trailering somewhere on the trip in the last 8 years.

Actually, I think I saw a newer Mac 26 a couple of days ago, but I haven't taken the opportunity to walk the marina to see if they have a slip here. Maybe this weekend....

For me, I've never ran across another M yet, have only seen one X under sail in the distance, another in a marina and never sailed and finally ran into a fellow member of this board this past weekend: Silk. He was Launching as I was de-rigging for the journey home.

That's true - in the Michigan City marina there are three X's on my row alone and 5-7 in the Marina. 8)

On my sailing grounds (15 miles south to 5 miles north of the Bay Bridge) I have seen another Mac or two or three on the water every single time I have gone out. Met several of the owners...and sailed with three of the owners. Evenly split between :macx: and :macm: .

Very cool seeing other Macs out on the water.

I think that several of them are not users of this forum.

Need to get a Chesapeake Macgregors Gathering orchestrated. Maybe this Fall I will have time to try and organize something.

Cheers,
Jim

How about a Lake Michigan gathering :?: . :) I know there are several Macs in the southern part of the lake. In South Haven there must be 3 :macx: 's and 4 :macm: 's. Not surprising Mich. City has so many, with Roy from Superior Marine right there. I bought J.A.W.S. :macx: from him 10 years ago and never happier 8) 8) . If any one is interested p.m. me and let me know and we will see what we can put together.

At Ghost Lake, west of Calgary, Alberta there are a couple of boats that AREN'T Macs. In all seriousness I would estimate that 20% of all the sailboats are a Mac, mostly of the X and M vintage but a few S and Ds.
