looking at a venture 22

Post by sailor1 »

I'm going to look at a venture 22 this weekend and have some questions
1. what're some common problem areas I should look for ? I know the general issues to look for are like: bottom blisters, hull/deck sealing, cracked fiberglass, fitting coming loose etc.
2. what are some signs that the sails needs replacement soon? what about the keel ? Per the seller, it has been sitting on the hard for the past few years
3. the spec says max hp =30 , but on another forum someone says that the boat is too lightly built for that and it can't plane so it's a waste. is this true? does anyone have first hand experience on this? I really want to put a 25+ hp on it so I can get to Catalina island from Long Beach in 2 or 3 hrs max.

here're some pic's

thanks in advance.

I don't think that is going to happen as the other person said the hull is a displacement hull and not a planing hull like on the X or M. Even if you could put on enough HP to get it to plane it isn't designed for that and I wouldn't think it would be safe.

Also one last thing and that is even with an X or M you might run into wind/wave conditions where you aren't going to be going at planning speed from Catalina once you were over there if weather came in on you.

Good luck and hopefully you will get some other views on this besides mine,

Ditto what Sumner says. Putting a big engine on a V-22 is a waste. We had a Merc 7.5 long shaft on our V-222. Hull speed is about 6+ kt and no matter how big the engine you won't get much more out of her than that. Your just adding weight in the stern and fuel consumption. Half the fun of getting to Avalon is the sail. What year and hull # is she. Being in So. Cal. you're in Venture central. Plenty of resources and folks to glean from. What part of Cal are you in? Things to look at. If the keel is fiberglass covered check for splitting/swelling of glass. If it's cast iron you should be okay. if it's been on the hard for a long period of time all the through hull fitting should be recaulked. Check for keel trunk damage i.e. lock bolt hole. per picture she seems to be in okay shape. Engine is perfect size. any thing we can do to help let us know. Fair winds and Full Sails...

If you haven't bought a boat before, its a good idea to bring someone along that knows some things. Just from your pix, I can see that part of the rub rail is missing, (easy fix) but you can see that buying a used boat, the purchase price isn't the final price of the boat. Looking at the hull
you want to look for separation of the gel coat, blisters, and such, wood rot, where ever there is wood. bent mast, sails should be run up as you look at the boat. Looking for tears, dirty doesn't mean wore out, but the sails should hang without looking stretched out. Ropes should be
unfrayed, but again dirty doesn't mean wore out. As you can see all new rope costs a few bucks if needed.

what kind of deal you getting?
the motor looks good on the outside, and that's a good hp for that boat. Any problems that are easy to fix but are there, should be pointed out
and the price should reflect them. rot would be a no sale to me, unless its trim wood that's easy to replace.

Catalina is 4 hrs, or so from long beach at 6 mph, you want to get there faster, just leave early. My mac m from MDR (35 miles) once took me
7hrs to Catalina, and I have a 115hp motor, the seas determine how long, with the boat you are looking at, 4 hrs in calm seas would be a fun comfortable ride for the wife and you, maybe run into dolphins, and fun sights along the way. Like freedom said, "getting there is half the fun".

whatever price you pay, expect to spend another thousand just fixing it up, and that's if its in good shape. (sails, motor, rigging need to be OK) That doesn't include personalizing. If you cant do the work yourself, triple the thousand. Its Part of the fun, fixing up a boat, if you don't see it that way, don't buy the boat. If you buy the boat, keep posting about it, it's fun to read and help out with this stuff.

.....and more................... that's the truth :)

Talking about canvas work and for sure off topic here, but today we are trying to figure out how much sunbrella we need to replace the Bimini, Dodge, Sail Cover and UV on the Genoa. The reason is that through tomorrow, Monday July 18th, Sailrite has a sale going on. If you order $500 worth of supplies then you get a $100 gift certificate. This might help someone.

We still have some Sunbrella left from Mac projects, so I hope we don't get to $500, but with material, zippers, fasteners, clear window material, etc. I'll bet we do  . Anyway if you have a big project now is the time to buy from them....

just an update. I think I probably got the deal of the month, will post pic's later. trailered it home this morning around 2 AM, wife and sister rear guarding me in 2nd vehicle, brother-in-law and I towing in front. the boat hasn't seen water in 4 years, but is tarped over, gel coat, sail, keel look GOOD, motor sparkingly clean inside out, trailer rust free. trailer has always been on jack stand, tires didn't wobble during 1.5 hr trip home.

problem? I don't know how to rig this thing, don't even know how to step the mast, never sailed a boat this big before (well, 22 footer). I think i just did something crazy....

My $850 V21 was extremely dirty when I bought her, but a good powerwashing did the trick. Buffing and waxing the hull helped, but it was pretty obvious that she was painted over. My mast was fairly easy to set up for a first timer (ever!) but I really want a Mast raising system to save my back....

BOAT= Bring Out Another Thousand.....sigh

Labour of love though, right?
