Re: filling the Keel With LEED
I suppose that if you are considering filling the keel with lead, it would need some strengthening in other places, as well as mods to the hauling lines and pulleys. After that, maybe one should be thinking along the lines of a weighted wing keel or something similar, which when retracted flush with the hull, the boat could sit on.
Sounds like a special keel should be moulded for this. Has it been done yet?

Re: filling the Keel With LEED
I would not do it.
Having destroyed 2 daggers I was very happy each time to see absolutely no damage to the hull. Replacing a dagger is easy (if you are not careful enough to get it damaged in the first place) and relatively cheap. Then there's rigging it so you can actually raise it.
I find the Mac sails fine as is.

By Filling .... we mean adding a 150lbs of lead, and its very doable and is said to be beneficial.. The Flush Mount Wing Keel has been done already as well and we had a long thread this past spring about it..Weight and a Wing are on my list , of to does when I find the time..

Yea, it's been done.
Remember, the M dagger is hollow and thin. Adding weight means adding more strength so it won't snap off or bulge at the bottom. The X, I dunno how you would do it. A solid metal board?

Here is one of the original threads and mod pages for adding lead to the X.

Re: filling the Keel With LEED
Leeding by example here
Why not use just beech "beach" sand
if you hit something you will not be dragging 200# of leed around
which could be quite nasty if she gets rough on you if its hanging off a brkn D/B on the other hand breek your D/B & the sand washes away, no protention of 200# leed dragging below & aft waiting to foul your rudders or even your eng. prop
trailering on a long trip wash out the sand & mty the D/B, get to your destination 200# lighter or carry 200# more of medical supplies like Scotch & wine , beer
if yer a fisherman fill the D/B with yer chicken wing & drum stick bones & every time yer drop yer D/B you'd be Chumming for Sharks !

I cannot even imagine the effort needed to fill and empty sand from a DB.. Good idea Jon but I .... dont see it a plausible..

Forget Leed or sand - try filling the daggerboard with some heavy water

Re: filling the Keel With LEED
I took out my centerboard as I found the head was split were they fitted the two pieces together. I put 3 layers or mat and featered it out so no one can see it has been repaired. I than mixed up a gal. of polyester resin 1/2 gal. at a time) and pumped it into the weep holes on both sides and let it settle to the bottom of centerboard than once hard I end for end it and pored remaining 2 quarts in the head board , I taped off the bolt holes once it was close to them and redrilled.
I did it to reinforce the inside of the board. There is still hollow area close to the weep hole but I was trying to balance weight. I probably added 9 lbs of Resin and board is much stronger.
I also changed centerboard line to all braded haveing a rigger splice in a very tight eye for the bolt to pass thru.
I need a roller at the deck to make it much easier lifting the centerboard.
You can add lead pellits and resin in but you will need some kind of lifting device (maybe a 3-4 to 1 pully).
Probably around 100 lbs lead would be max. that would fit in and I think there are cross sections that could prevent the pellits from getting to bottom.

any body have tried to make the keel a bit more Heavy
on the
that would greatly improve helling and sailing handaling cheracteristics even if its 200 pounds it would drop a down and at that distance i think it would count for allot more then 200pounds
making it a Sailing motor sailer (notice the emphasis on the Sailing part
What do u guys/Galls think

and not to mention would be abel to track closer in to the wind and the kiel would protect the leed and thus lead would not rust. i think i like this mod allot
and only adds 200 pounds to the trailer
