Blocks on stanchions ok?

Post by Cris »

After 10 years with my 26X I’m finally running lines allthe way aft to stern corners a la John Tiede's mod http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/index.php?view=60. I’m also running the main halyard all the way back. I’d like to keep the main halyard outside my full enclosure until reaching the very stern. In order to do this my plan is to attach blocks to the stanchions rather than to any fiberglass surface and run the halyard stanchion to stanchion.

Does anybody see any problem with main halyard load bearing stress on the stanchions?

I thought of having turning blocks and jammers mounted on the stantions. Will settle for having my 2 foresail furling lines running outside the stantions on some home-made little brackets. I'm pretty desperate to keep my decks clear.

I put my rear winches slightly forward, and moved my main cleats further aft. I found the originals pathetic and badly placed, so 2 birds with one stone.
I changed the original cleat for the jamming one in the photo.

Restless, I've visited your mod pics and am impressed with your creativity. But I didn't see any pics of the brackets you mentioned. If you get a chance can you post something showing how you guide your lines back to the cockpit?

Our 2001 X since new has snap shackled a small block to each rear stanchion eye (to which the aft end of the cockpit life line is fixed). The blocks act as turning blocks for the sheets of our 200 sq ft drifter. The stanchions have not suffered from this extra duty.

thanks Chris
I'll try to get something up before we go. Only a couple of weeks to go and there is still sooo much to do!

My H340 had loops welded to the stern rails for a spinnaker, as did most of the other Hunters of similar vintage. I wasn't sure about them, but I confirmed it with the factory. Ratchet blocks would be the norm, with winches nearby (you could see the pads for them), though I had neither a spinnaker nor winches for one. I did use those loops for blocks for the jib sheets with a whisker pole, though.

Point being, it's hardly unheard of using a stern rail weldment for such relatively light duty work. I don't think I'd put a large load into a straight cantilevered stanchion, but for shallow angles of turn, and/or light loads with greater angles, I wouldn't hesitate to use stanchions or stern rails. Let common sense govern.

You can see the loop inside the horseshoe bouy, next to the electric line.
