Re: Do You carry manuals on board

Post by Doug W »

I have a notebook in a canvas bag that I keep onboard. It's filled (stuffed) with all manuals. I like the idea of switching to pdf for my tablet but with my buzzard's luck, my tablet will crash when I need something specific. I will probably switch to pdf and just a print out for critical components such as the motor...

Yep they are ....

.... all on board along with lots of other reading material for Ruth and I. We also have lots of tools on board ..

...in case we need to use the manuals. A large tool box, above, with SAE tools a large one with Metric tools. 2 cordless drills, a jig saw, charger, a large swage tool along with 1X19 5/32 wire and the fittings to make up a stay or shroud, and ....

...lots of fittings, wire, plumbing, nuts and bolts, screws, glass repair, 5200, 4200, 4000, oil, lube, spare props, and cotter pins, dinghy repair kit and lots of different size line in long lengths. We also always have the mast raising system onboard. More or less about anything one would need to repair the boat or the inflatable. Too much I'm sure, but I was glad I had it when we broke the solar panel at Marco Island and had to fix that mess and install a new one that was different than the original. We have also used the above for other repairs and/or upgrades on the water. Way more than what is needed for day sailing or in most cases an overnighter, but we are often a long ways from the Suburban/trailer or sometimes even a marine.

Yep keep all manuals on board with everything to do with the boat and if we are travelling to a certain area all reports including fishing and maps etc, we also carry a laptop with any other info from home inc ideas from here.
We are probably a bit different in that we travel for longer periods by road and water 2-5 months so I made some drop down shelves above the rear berths which house all this as well as supplies for charging etc.

Yep, I carry the manuals and lots of tools and spares too. I don't like interruptions to my float plan. :-)

Besides, it keeps up my "Mr Fixit" persona.

Motor manual is the one I really want - all the other stuff I can fix from 'native ability'

Did manage to jury rig an electrical system repair on my boat on Cuttyhunk last month...sans manual..

If its on the boat, I have a manual for it. From the factory manuals all the way down to home to my toilet. Never no when they will come in handy.

I keep some, but to be honest, most manuals are useless.

For example: Suzuki oil light blinks to tell you to change the oil. I did change it but nowhere in the manual does it tell how to reset the counter. Google wins. (Pull safety kill switch 3 times with key on)

Sony stereo... totally useless manual except for color coding of wires.

I keep very few manuals on board, particularly sailing books, since you can never really look at them when you need them - there's not enough time. I keep the manual for the motor, my tools and some simple supplies... and that's it.

So, given the pretty pictures of all that, I'd keep the Snicker's bar and get rid of the rest! ;)
