Transom Valve Replacement

Post by Benmcgov »

After an awesome trip at JMGT 2011 I decided to take my :macx: down to Patrick AFB in Cocoa Beach and did some more sailing around there. When I pulled my :macx: out of the water after about a week I pulled my T Valve handle and the only half of the gate came up. I guess the water in that area has some old NASA runoff or something...

Anyhow....I just got my new valve in from BWY(These guys are on it). Now the fun part...how to put the nuts on when all I can get into the hole is a finger :?: :!: :?: :!: Thats when  went off in my head. I used some 3m 5200 and just put some on my finger the "glued" the nut to myself....pause for reaction..... and did this a few more times ...... then...done.

So the Moral of the story is "if you ever have to replace that valve just glue nuts to your finger :!: "

But seriously.......I hope this helps :!:

Cheers,
Ben

I just replaced the gate valve on my 2001x. Not much to it.There are no nuts,Bolts just thread into the hull.Just don't forget to lube the rubber gaskets with vaseline.I like Cheryel and the crew at BWY. But the same valve is available at any RV shop for less than half there price.
Good luck

Frank,

I am new to the :macx: ! Is there anything else I can get for my boat that is cheaper elsewhere...like an RV store? I had no idea that the valve was generic until I recieved it. What are they used for on RVs? Thanks for the heads up.

Hey Ben,

Glad to know that you fixed it, but I am confussed on where you put the nuts. The unit comes with four nuts, but I only used screws with plenty of 5200. I ended up buying new SS screws the same length of the old ones which are much longer than the ones that came with the unit.
As it has been said on this board before, it is a Valterra gate valve, but the one used in the boat has the metal guillotine and handle. Most of the units that you find for $20 online are plastic.

Blackwater (and maybe graywater) tank drains, though I'm not sure which is worse service - the river I'm in, or a blackwater tank. :|

I got it from BWY since I was getting something else there, but you can find it online, search for valterra gate valve at any RV site and you will find the different models, it is about $30.

The gasket on my :macx: gate valve was cracked and holding the gate open.
I removed the whole valve, epoxied the screw holes shut and bought a $5 expandable plug from Ace for the hole.
if im in my boat then so is the ballast, safety first.
can reach the plug while afloat np.
goin to add a thether to it but still got a spare n case i drop one :o

i replaced mine which was a 1.5 or 2 inch transom valve model of my 1996 :macx: with a 3 inch model for which i had to carefully cut a larger hole where the previous valve was.
I bought the 3 inch valve online from a UK supplier :macx:

I found mine at a local rv place. It had the plastic gate. I don't think it's a big deal.
Eventually I will formulate a replacement on my own that will be better than this valve.

I know this is a super old thread but I'm just going to add something for those looking to fix their transom valve.

The gate valve is made by a company called Valterra. It is a 3" SLIP ABS Gate valve. Models 5301,5302, 5305 has got the stainless steel paddles and should work as a direct replacement. Just swap out the handle with the one from your boat and your all set for the swap. $33 from amazon with prime shipping.
