Storage

Post by Weasil »

First let me say thanks to the heeling questions.. I am relatively new to the Macgregor, but after about a year, I love it. The only problem I am running into is space. It feels like I am constantly having to shift this to access that, i.e., I love the galley but hate having to remove cushions, slide the galley, etc., same w the cooler space. I have looked at several of the mods for the galley and storage, and may do some. I would just like to here from users who spend a lot of time on the Mac, and what has proven successful for stowage and where, etc. As always, thanks for the advice.

We have an X, not the M like yours, so what we've done won't necessarily work on your boat. Regardless of how you mod and organize, you'll never get away from having to shift things around while locating whatever you need at the moment. We refer to this process as "the tile game", referring to those precursors to Rubik's cube with the 16 numbered tiles you slide around. Just keep looking at the spaces you have, and fit shelves, drawers, hooks and plastic storage tubs whenever possible.

What worked and works for me ? May Not work for you....
1. I bought 2 - 2'x4' Parabolic lens for fluorescent fixtures.. kind of like chrome plastic egg crate? Hundreds of open squares and pretty dang strong.
2. With the help of JB Weld I attached numerous Ty-rap attachment Squares ( sticky backs ) and used those with a few ty-raps to hold the lens in place. Now you have a ventilated flat bottom, for all your "holds".. No More Wet Stuff No more lost stuff No More stuff you can see but cannot reach..
3. For me .. under the sink? Is sink stuff...and polycarbonate glasses etc and dishes and pots and pans etc etc..
4. those shallow cubby holes in the movable galley? ? I cut them out for trays and store all kinds of Kitchen stuff and a few Items I want to be able to grab quickly.. Though I have a pressure pump for my 30 gallon bladder under there as well and I retained the 5 gallon bag for EMergencies..
5. Boxed ..Dry ..Canned foods in under the seat next to the ladder.. I found a plastic laundry basket, that with a little help from Mr. Tin Snips ... fits perfect and keeps everything in plain sight..
6. The Other dinette seat holds tools and MY STUFF..I can fix just about anything on anyone's boat at any time.. I never charge and there by.. I always have more beer and booze than I will ever need... : )
7.Head has 4 stacking bins and holds TP and Magazines and books and Manuals for the boat and a copy of important papers in a Zip lock bag.. ( I have two sets of copies on the boat)
8. Across from the head again with the plastic ventilation bottoms are marked Bla bla bla..
9. Above my gally are 2 wire spice racks with spices and sunscreen etc etc I have a few of those " buckets : ) with suction cups here and there ..
10. I have a wire Folders.. holder( like on your office desk) mounted side ways on the liner by the dinette that holds my charts..
That's just a start.. Try to keep things ....together.. Food Tools Reading Kitchen ....keep them in groups..
For me if what I want is not in a known GROUP.. its got very few choice in places to hide.. Not perfect but Maybe just maybe you'll get a good idea or two..

'C' shaped shower curtain hooks from walmart work great to hang stuff off from the inside liner (extra lines, bathroom organizer, kettle, fabric shopping bags with stuff ect). Velcro CD organizer keeps CD's boating registration and rollable solar panel out of the way. After the first year aboard we are removing the back berth cushions and replacing them with interlocking high density foam. We keep all the regularly used kitchen items under the kitchen (which should be redone; time permitting this winter with new top, stove, sink and drawers). The best mod i've seen that helps stop the musical chairs is the 'galley storage' by mdeane in the mods.

We mounted a "shoe organizer" thing in the head for all the little stuff that we frequently need access to. Has lots of pockets. I think someone posted a similar thing in the mod section. Also, took out the head door and replaced it with a curtain. I'm thinking about redoing the galley this winter. We also have a couple of cushions which we leave at home. Still working out what works best for us. :)

FYI, there's even less (a lot less) storage space in a 25. :(

I have 1 roughneck storage box with food floating around in the aft berth at all times with enough food to last 1 week for 4 + plastic cutlery and paperplates. All the underseat storage areas have the same but uncovered roughneck storage boxes
http://www.rubbermaid.com/Category/Page ... RP091418or
or small recycling boxes with handles which fit perfectly under seat
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/8 ... ?locale=en
and serve a dual purpose as pails when I need them. I also bungee my 5 day cooler behind the companionway stairs where the cooler opens up from the stairs and is more easily accessible or bungeed on one of the aft fishing seats when its free.

Quoted for Truth. I lived aboard a 500 foot warship for four years, and the shifting and lack of storage game never ends. It's the nature of the beast. We use snap-top clear plastic containers of all different sizes and pack everything in them. They're easy to move around and you can see through them to see what you're looking for, and they keep everything dry. They're even a few hundred lbs. of additional buoyancy if the boat sinks :-). They're packed into every nook and cranny on the boat, even under the head.
