I just picked up a venture 21 lots of questions
For years i have been asking the owner of the boat yard my dad keeps his boat at about this venture . This year the guy told me i could have it . Its a project tho ( im glad i found this site ) it has be sitting since 1992. The rudder and tiller are in great shape , some of the standing rigging needs to be replaced, most if not all of the running rigging needs to be replaced ( im going to have a lot of questions when i get to that ) ,every thing needs to be painted ,and the keel needs to be removed and rebuilt. sails seem to be good there are 2 jibs one is a genoa .
first question my mast has no spreaders what are the pros and cons of adding them
2nd any info in rebuilding the keel esp info on how to epoxy around the main bolt and the cable ( seems to be the start of the problems)
3rd why is my cabin is set up some what different and i dont have a hatch in the cockpit by the stern and the door has W 21 on it ( i seen a simular post about this)
4th im open to any info sugestions

In answer to your questons: Welcome to the legion of the damned. Addiction worse than drugs but at least you'll wake up remembering where you were.
Venture 21's didn't come stock with spreaders and some came without lower shrouds. We had a '71 and never installed spreaders.
If you have the ability to build a lifting frame out of 4x4's you can easily lift the boat and pull the trailer out. If not get a bunch of your buddies and lift the boat off the trailer and set it on supports. Then build a cradle on casters and remove the keel bolt and lower the keel onto the cradle. strip off old glass and rebuild. easy peasy lemon squeezy.
W-21 on hatch cover. You may have a classic V-21 which evolved from the Westwind that Roger originally built in the early '60's.
Older V-21's weren't built with aft storage hatch.
Can you posts pics? Fair Winds and Full Sails....

I'm not able to respond to most of your query, but I would probably assume that I needed to replace both the standing rigging and running rigging for safety.

Did you see the part about the hull number being on the stringers inside?

Re: I just picked up a venture 21 lots of questions
If your boat looks like the picture on the post then you have a Venture 21. As Catagale said the hull # S/B drilled on a fore/aft stringer under port side cockpit seat. Friend of mine owned V-8. Do you have original sails. WE had #173. If so the sail # and Hull # are most likely the same. If you can find the hull # contact MacGregor in Costa Mesa and they might be able to tell you the year it was built. Do you have cast iron or fiberglass encased keel? Keep us posted. Fair winds and full sails...Old Salt.

The keel is fiberglass and steel. Im good with steel fabracation and ok with fiberglass but im concernd with how im going to glass around the keel pivit bolt, cable and such.that seems like those areas are wgear the trouble starts i have to check the sail numbers i cant locate the hull id number as far as the boat specs go it defently a venture but there are some diffrences from all the boats I found online

Re: I just picked up a venture 21 lots of questions
How about glassing in a SS sleeve (bushing) for the pivot bolt to go through? Aluminum would probably also work, but I'd only go that route if the boat lived on the trailer and not in a slip, especially a salt water one,sublime08020 wrote:... but I'm concerned with how I'm going to glass around the keel pivot bolt, cable and such.that seems like those areas are where the trouble starts...

Re: I just picked up a venture 21 lots of questions
Its defently getting sleved I mite machine one and press it into the keel I fab but glassing around that is going to be tricky vibrations and being banged around will probably cause it to leak there again
