Mac 19 or Mac 26C?

Post by MacNCheese »

Please assume you will have 2 sailors and your trips will be mostly 2 days - 3 days. If due to budget, your choice of boat was between :mac19: and the 26C, which would you choose and why?

I had always thought a :mac19: would be too small for a 3 day trip. But after seeing more pictures, it seems like you have almost everything that you do in a :macx: and you have standing room unlike the 26C.

Highlander wrote:The :mac19: does not have standing head room unless u open the hatch some guy's converted the hinged hatch with gas strutts to make it a pop-top like the 26d or 26c

I lived in my :mac19: on wk-ends during the summer months was OK for a single guy but I'd think it would be crowded for two for more than one night great little power sailor but had to do alot of mods to make it a better sail boat where as the 26 C/D are ecellent sail boats & fast & with the pop-top up way more room for wk-ending or cruising

because the :mac19: is a power sailor it makes a good day sailor & power boat if u have a camper as a tow vehical or cottage to sleep in

Excellent info Highlander! Thanks.
I had originally asked this question at the end of the thread you just linked to, but then cut and pasted it here so that it wouldn't take that thread off topic.

I can see I'm wrong about the :mac19: having standing room. I assumed it did because it has the double row of windows like the :macm:.

I had a 26 D from 1988-2000, but never have seen a 19 in real life. However, comparing specs, I see advantages for each....
The 19....less towing weight (1630# vs 2200# bare) and so maybe a bit smaller tow vehicle, lighter and thus easier to raise mast, planes with 40 hp motor ( hi speed desired?)
The 26D....much faster under sail (faster than our current 26D) with theoretical hull speed about 1 kn faster than the 19, roomier interior.
Both have tow weight minimized by use of releasable water ballast.
