Another Successful 90Hp install
I have successfully installed a Suzuki 90 to my 26M, thanks to this forum and especially to Victor, Kendall, Billy, Patrick and Bill from the Apex/Raleigh area.
I feel extremely fortunate to have had five! Macgregor owners helping me with the install. I took a lot of video footage and plan to put it together to help other installers have an idea of what to expect.
The install happened a few weekends ago, and I just burned the motor in, with 10 hours of driving, sailing and idling around Lake Keowee in upper SC.
I am one happy camper!

Re: Another Successful 90Hp install
I had to edit my first post because I was so focused on the manly drilling, ratcheting, and sawing that I forgot the most important part! The un-manliess that so often makes it all come together.
Kendall, Admiral of the Compromise and wife to Victor was an integral part of the install.
She helped me get the motor on her dad's low to the ground trailer (very important for the lower backs of all involved - getting it our of my F-150 would have killed us.) She calmed the neighbor's passions about having a sailboat in their front yard for three days (the property owners association does not allow it). She fed us, listened to our constant chatter over parts and install glitches, plus she took all of my favorite pics - the ones from the dock of our 20 min first splash.
We could not have done it without her, and I'm glad we did not.
Which reminds me, I could or would not have gotten this boat without my wife's blessing.
Maybe that's why naming the boat the LauraB was so easy of a decision.
Can anyone concur?

I know you planned it out well in advance and it sounds like it paid off.

A skill I found out I didn't have

I definitely concur!
I have always been on favour of a mixed team.
Well Done David
And congrats to all.
Great to have one more MacM owner with an engine on the larger side.
We look forward to your stories and new experience with this great motor.
Enjoy

Great to see another 90hp Suzuki installed.
What did you use as a backing plate and what type of wedges?

Video:
The amount I have is pretty overwhelming. For me and for anyone who’s not totally craving their own install. I've been so busy with boat prep that it's taking a back seat, but I will get it out, for sure. We recorded a lot of good info.
Here are a few random pics. https://plus.google.com/photos/10784359 ... 9352856161
Dave's Question About Plates and Wedges:
I bought these TH Marine Wedges (Google Search http://j.mp/Hkezab), then misplaced them during the install (Doh!) I guess I will know the difference now since I plan to put them on later. I already see the need to drop the bow at full throttle.
I never saw the need for a backing plate, based on other's comments here. I did use another TH marine bar that was perfect fit for the inside transom well: (Google Search http://j.mp/GUpaFn) It would have to be bent to work on an X, though.
Victor came up with some perfect large square plates for the interior lower bolts. I had bought the wrong thing: a steel 1 x 25 x 1/8 in bar.

Re: Another Successful 90Hp install
Was the engine new, or used?
I've always thought you couldn't install your own with OB's over a certain size, which is why I ask.

Re: Another Successful 90Hp install
If you don't mind my asking, where does one buy such an engine without dealer installation required? I'd like to save my pennies and upgrade from my Honda BF50. The need for speed, but the economy of a blow-boat.vkmaynard wrote:New in a crate with a 6 year factory warranty just like ours.
