Navionics you can select the chart area you want to store in high def and the App downloads the data. Then you have it permanently (you can delete to recover memory if you need to). There is no need for an Internet connection while you are actually navigating.

I have the iPad 2. I write with it and use a good painting program. I keep most of my iTunes music on it.
I hook it to my iPhone sometimes to surf the web. I do not use it for navigstion. It's not weathered.
I don't have any manuals for the yachts equipment since I would carry the originals anyway. They work if wet, dropped, sat on, or with no power.
I use the iPhone for most serious web browsing now. I usually have it with me and it's pretty quick.
I keep a cheap laptop for writing longer stories or whatnot.

For $20/month you can make your iPhone/Pad a WiFi hotspot. Or jailbreak it and do it for free.

They are getting pretty good at detecting jailbreaks and enforcing terms of service on iPhone contracts. Without moralizing about the phone company profits etc, buying a phone does not endow the public to use it however they wish.

AT&T can easily detect tethering with MyWi and rumors are that if they catch you, they will automatically add the $20 tether plan to your bill. Verizon will do the same. PDAnet has a "Hide Usage” option that is supposed to work well. The easiest way to get caught is to go from 500megs of usage to 5GB. It's pretty hard to pull 5GB with just the handset so that's a giveaway.

Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, jailbreaking iPhones is legal in the United States, although Apple has announced that the practice "can violate the warranty". It's up to the individual to accept that risk.

If you are planning on using your iPhone as a serious WiFi hotspot, I would suggest paying the $20/month and be done with it. Verizon will let you turn it on/off as you need it. So if you only want to use it in the summer, then just pay for those months.

If you go the jailbreak route, right now the worst consequence for violating your T&C is your carrier will charge you the $20 you are trying to avoid. Frankly, I don't see the huge benefit to jailbreaking your iPhone. The tethering plan is a nice alternative to the MiFi thingy they sell.

I finished my little 8x10 picture frame mount for the iPad and went outside to test it in the boat. Can't see a darn thing. Turned off the auto bright, went full bright, a little better. I was going to mount it near the hatch but now I think it will go above the sink. The app I have has Big Numbers and I can see them from the tiller. The GPS map program is readable also. Actually, this will workout better for the crew.

I will post some photos when the mod is done.

Frame -$9.00(Michael's 40% off)
TV Bracket with elbows -$ 14(Amazon)
Misc parts - $ 5.00

Same with ATT of course. The pay as you go by month is very reasonably priced and is perfect for summer cruising.

If I paraphrase what I think I am reading here, even though I do not have a cell phone plan, I could buy a one month or two month card from a cell phone carrier that would enable an Ipad 3 (4G model) to work while sailing providing there is cell phone coverage in those areas by that particular carrier.

I'm not quite sure about Canada Phil. I have to add the Canada plan to my iPad when I head north of course.

You don't need another card, it's built into the IPad, as long as you buy one with the 4g option built in.. You can turn it on or off a month at a time as needed. You can ether use the IPad direct or tether a computer to it as well, for another 10 bucks a month.

You will need to have cell coverage in your sailing area of course, correct.

Got the new IP3, (wireless only), amazed at every aspect of it. Can't wait to get out with it as it's got all you need at an overall great price, specifically the apps.

You can get the whole of North Amarica detailed Navionics charts for $50, (compare Garmin 10% coverage $300).
I'll be picking up the Dual Electronics Bluetooth GPS receiver, (http://xgps150.dualav.com), in a week or two. Certified by Apple which gives you real GPS, not triangulated cell.

In one package you can have all your great offline apps for trip logs and reference material...keep your boat & equipment manuals handy, books, mags, games, music, recipes, movies...plus take your pictures and videos.

If you lucky / rich enough to have the 4G then you've got everything almost all the time or just wait for wireless in the marina then check the weather, catch up on Skype, emails, blog your trip, update position, and all the rest...it's mental.

Haven't done the research yet but the only thing that'll be missing is getting sonar on there but it's not far off. Best to keep the old Garmin as a backup anyway....JR

Hmm, Navionics is only $14.99 for US/Canada and all inland waters, incuding small lakes. For my Android of course. Works great on the phone, or tablet.

Weatherproofing an iPad is simple: Put it in a ziplock freezer bag, and tape the back to fit. Gestures work through the plastic just fine.

Use a snack-size back for your iPhone or android. I put my phone in a snackbag and put it back in my pocket every time we go sailing.

Works like a charm, costs about a nickel.

There's a company in Utah that will vapor-depose a coating throughout your iPad or iPhone for about $60 that will make it totally waterproof. Saw it at CES--unmodified looking iPhone, no case, inside a fish tank, powered on and operational. Pretty cool technology. http://www.hzoinside.com/technology

Tried the freezer bag and it does work great...do you anticipate any issue with it holding too much heat in?

The IPad seems to generate quit a bit....

Nope. Freezer bags are very thermally conductive--that's sort of the point of them. They'll radiate heat just as well as anything else. You can suck the air out of the corner of the bag with your mouth if you want the plastic to really grip the pad or iphone just before you zip the final section.
