Halyard snagging on upper mast hound
My halyard flips over to the port side of the mast and snags on the upper mast hound nut.
Suggestions I searched for included: 1) reversing the bolt so the nut is on the starboard side, 2) install 2 snap eyes on each side of the hound, 3) replace bolt with an eye bolt, 4) replace nut with an eye nut.
These were all suggestions. Appreciate comments from anyone who has actually resolved the problem with one of the above, or another approach.
Regards, Larry

Re: Halyard snagging on upper mast hound
I've had the problem from time to time, but choose to ignore it. When it happens, I just shake the halyard to loosen it, and then proceed with what I was going to do. A violent shake takes only a moment. I just don't think it's that large a problem so as to make changes, but that's me.

Does your halyard snag on the uper mast hound nut, or the threaded part of the 3/8" bolt sticking out of the nut.
If the latter, cut off the threaded part at the nut.

... and/or replace it with an acorn nut.
(I'll assume you know what that is and this is not a joke).

Re: Halyard snagging on upper mast hound
Couldn't tell, as the boat was bouncing around a bit at the time. I could not free it from the cockpit as it's threaded through a Harken 140 at the base of the mast ... I have to go up to the mast to snap it around. I'll take the mast down this weekend ... I'm inclined to put some kind of fairlead or eye snaps on the starboard side, perhaps on each side of the mast hound.Bill at BOATS 4 SAIL wrote:Does your halyard snag on the uper mast hound nut, or the threaded part of the 3/8" bolt sticking out of the nut.

One solution is to store your lines run on the aft side of the spreaders, then flip them around forward of the spreaders when you need them.
This also keeps them from getting fouled in top of the roller furler.

I have acorn nuts on the bolt and still have the same problem. I just look up as I raise the
main and shake out the halyard if needed. Maybe I'll make a fairing for it after I run out
of other mods.

I turned the bolt around and it is hardly ever a problem now.

Use a button head socket head cap screw, 3/8-16 x 4" long. McMaster number 92949A641. The button head will be less likely to grab the halyard, especially if you put it on the side that's doing the grabbing.
