Stay Sail... aka Cutter Rig

Post by Erik Hardtle »

Just finished testing and posting my newest mod... a Stay Sail... (aka Cutter Rig)

Image

Features:
====> Self Tacking
-using the smallest track and car harken makes. Video: mms://208.180.16.65/StaySailTacking.wmv
====> Roller Furling
- didn't know they can make roller furlers that small.
====> Detachable
- I can lift it off the deck and lay it up against the mast while on the water if I don't want to use it.
====> Good Reading Spot
- my wife can read a book on the bow. (didn't really plan that one... just kinda happened.)

Image

Cons:
-----> I blame Billy and Ron for putting the idea in my head. 8)
-----> Can't open the front hatch when it is hooked up. (unless I detach it) :|
-----> It added 1 minute to my 9 minute set-up and launch time. :P

Erik that's a great rig! Please post where you got the parts and what it cost, I've been looking for a convenient way to add a smaller jib.

Curious about your anchor! Can you tell me how you have it set up?

That’s ok imitation around here is the best form of flattery provided you are man enough to handle the BS that goes with it. However there will be less BS when you take someone else’s idea and improve upon it. Eric has definitely improved upon the staysail idea with one exception. I think Eric’s staysail moves out to far. This extended travel will not allow his boat to take full advantage of a staysail that can allow you to get so close to the wind that you can sail on a beat.

Now once you are successful in improving on a proven idea you have just up the anti. This in turn makes any self respecting red blooded American male have to hit the drawing board or bring out some plans he has had on the back burner. Dam you Erick my wife's new kitchen will never get done at this rate :D .

The whole gambit of Eriks modifications is what interested me.....cost effectiveness has always been a overriding principle for me....ie do it yourself,take an inexpensive/unwanted/unloved/unused item and make it "do".... Ebay and our close proximity to major population centres means a gold mine of unwanted...no longer shiney bits which our throw away society no longer wants.Just imagine the cost what the features Erik has now included in his Mac if factory standard
